I actually was in college when there was a research team going into something like this. A group of students were developing (it was a cross-class effort) a character creation menu for another class so that they could take random people (read: male, females, black, white, yellow, brown, etc) and have them sit down and make a character avatar for themselves to represent themselves in an MMO
Their findings were exactly the same. Males were all over the place, some made women avatars, some made men, some black while white and vice versa
Women, regardless of race etc, almost universally picked conventionally attractive western beauty standards for their avatar

>blue or green eyes
>fair or tanned skin
>skinny, or at least 'toned' and never 'fat'
They did a lot of their work in the library so I was able to follow their research
It's uncanny how even rather attractive women (cute / not-ugly-just-average black / yellow) would almost ALWAYS make a white female with previously mentioned features.
