Zosimus: A pagan historian who wrote a New History around 500 CE, Zosimus is the most famous example of a Roman directly blaming Christianity for the empire's decline. He wrote that the abandonment of the old gods and the embrace of the new religion, particularly by Emperor Constantine, caused the empire to lose divine favor. Zosimus was particularly critical of Christian emperors, such as Constantine, for making impious choices and failing to properly manage the empire, which led to a series of calamities.
