Leveling in D&D only increases the amount of class features you get, you only get a certain amount of attribute points to increase your attributes every so and so levels and every edition past 2 lets you freely take levels in other classes so I'm not even sure what you're complaining about.

You literally cannot get any unintended bonuses from leveling in D&D
