Magic is often an air, or an aura. Often the capital-w wizard won’t see themselves as a capital-w wizard, not unless they go out of their way to don the pointy hat and play the part. It’s much like Gandalf, who is essentially an alien that’s cosplaying as a wizard. He’s the equivalent of a sufficiently capable stage magician, or sage.
Roger Bacon didn’t actually believe in magic by the way. He believed in the power of psychology. He did believe in the miracles of God, so he still had a bit of irony to him.
He was similar to Pliny (I forget which Pliny) thought all witchcraft, magic, and sorcery was “absolute horse shit - but you never know if some invisible demon is around to enforce such horse shit, so you better entertain such superstition anyway…”, which is basically saying “it’s aliens”. Pic related.
