I'll give you the answer: it has become a massive industry with global impact.
Numbers must go up, so they play it safe and follow cookie-cutter plots that will sell to the lowest common denominator instead of paving the way with fresh but risky anime that might "flop" aka don't meet sales criteria.
Shit sucks massive ass, happened to the gaming industry as well but luckily AA studios and indie devs are stepping up and bringing fresh ideas and well executed games. Can't really say the same about anime.
