>Why isn't healthcare a basic right in this country?
Because a right is something that the state can't take away from you not something that you're given at the expense of other people's labor.
Our current healthcare system is garbage and you can make arguments for government run healthcare systems; but misconstruing healthcare as a right misunderstands the basic concept of what a right is.
Beyond that we have $38 TRILLION in debt and the most expensive healthcare costs in the world. We're broke, we're already running out of money and we can't afford to throw more money at a healthcare and insurance industry that's already screwing us with its prices. Steps need to be taken to get healthcare costs down and throwing more government money at the problem won't do that as it merely becomes more guaranteed profits for the healthcare and insurance industry (as in the case of the health insurance corporate subsidies that the Democrats have shut down the government to try and renew).
Allow for the importation of FDA approved drugs from other countries who get better prices for them. Allow people to go overseas for cheaper procedures and allow them to keep the money they save over what their insurer or government coverage would pay to provide a consumer incentive towards lower prices. This will put consumer price controls for lower prices back on the healthcare and insurance industry and will drive prices down by breaking the government protected healthcare cartel system.
