Pretty much, "Better a negro than an Irishman" was a common phrase in the American South. Blacks didn't usually get put on the worst jobs because them and their descendants were owned for life, they'd put temporary white slaves on the most dangerous tasks.
Whites should feel absolutely zero guilt or remorse over slavery imo. In fact, when pressed on it I even support having a bit of pride. It's a sign of strength and power that historically you were able to subject another race to chattel slavery. I'd certainly rather be descended from slave owners than those who were enslaved.
But we're too empathetic a people to enslave, it's not in our nature. That's the real reason we struggled so much to justify it to ourselves while other races partook in the practice with zero remorse. Whites simply have a kind-hearted nature.
