As a versofag, like so much of the game, I think how Gustave would've reacted is heavily up to interpretation. I feel it could be argued that Gustave represented the human spirit that the Lumierens possessed - despite being Aline's creations, they created amazing wonders that allowed them to fight and overpower their creator (shield dome, lumina converter). At the risk of sounding like an aliciafag, I wonder if this was meant to make us ponder whether the Lumierens could've ever found a way to overcome being bound to the canvas is given enough time.
