The build up to that was basically Harland pelting Sam with non-sequiturs he couldn't keep up with and making random offhand comments that to Sam's paranoid brain sounded like references to dirt/rumors from his past (e.g. tranny fucking, Marky, daddy issues), so the moment Harland suggested Sam literally build a nest out of twigs like a performing monkey it convinced Sam that indeed he'd been getting toyed with the whole time. But without any actual improvisational chops Sam did all he could do which is try to destroy the whole interview. It didn't work since Harland wasn't phased, but he tried his best.
