I think what really broke the camel’s back, so to speak, was what we got in Natlan. I don’t know about anyone else, but the Natlan we received was not anything like what I pictured when I heard Natlan being described in preceding regions. I heard it was the Nation of War led by the God of War and pictured a burnt and war-torn land, vishaps or other dragon descendents of all types, boneyards of ancient dragon skeletons, etc. I realize that it is not the game’s fault for not meeting my expectations, but I knew many people who expected similar things. The information fed to us in previous areas all created images like this, not the image of the mostly prosperous region Natlan turned out to be.

The Saurians felt like a massive disappointment to me. I know canonically they are indeed the descendants of the dragons, or at least related to them, but they look like dinosaurs. I got hyped to see dragons, and got dinosaurs. My opinion of the music in Natlan is perhaps biased, as I personally am not a fan of rap. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a rap song that I could say I liked, only some that I could tolerate.

Another layer to my disappointment with Natlan surrounded the Muratans that Venti mentions to Vanessa in the Genshin Manga. I fully expected to learn more about them when Natlan finally released, but to my surprise I saw no mention of them, nor did I see anyone fitting the description given. I suppose they might have all died out in the intervening 1000 years, but I still expected to see some trace of them at least.

In terms of the writing, I was put off by the entire idea of the Night Kingdom. It is my opinion that most stories should avoid anything that creates the possibility of resurrecting a character from the dead. More often than not, this just created an impression that death is no longer final and can be reversed.
