I don't think they were always this way. They were always dumb, gullible and easily marketed to, sure, but people's behavior has changed dramatically over the past decade and a half. Everyone has become a miserable sociopath obsessed with arguing with and dunking on others constantly. I think social media has massively amplified the narcissism and callousness of people at large. This has been going on long enough that most people have forgotten what it was like before all of this, and we have an entire generation that has been raised among this chaos - who, of course, turned out to be dysfunctional and insane to an unheard of level because of it.
