I've always primarily been a Standard player, but I am thinking of taking the Brawl pill finally. I've adamantly avoided Brawl because it contains Alchemy cards, but I think Standard is in such a rough spot I will am willing to turn my nose at the occasional Alchemy card. I've actually been having fun playing Brawl, I've been playing Elf Tribal, a tribal I've always been fond of.

There's not a lot you could do with that without it either being not worth the cost or way too broken. Maybe in a draft innovation set/straight-to-commander product it would be interesting, but in standard the effects would either be too slow, too irrelevant or too much for one card, no inbetween.

On the other hand, I kinda wish they played a bit more with the "Lands don't untap during your next turn" archetype. It obviously wasn't great for spells, but a permanent with an extra-broken ability that can do that would probably be a lot more reasonable and a lot easier to balance.

I've said it before, but I think stun counters were a great idea and they could do a lot more with them. One of those being lands, both as pseudo land destruction but also as a drawback on your own lands. That way there's more of a gradient instead of affecting all lands or none, and there's still an impact even when used on tapped lands. Not to mention more interaction in general with counters.

Only a handful. Nebuchadnezzar was named after the Babylonian King, and Rasputin Dreamweaver was originally just Rasputin.

Other were simply names giving that fit what the card looked like. There was also a great deal of last minute changes and rotation of the creatures colors. Adun Oakenshield for instance wears Green/White because he was originally supposed to be a green white legend.

I'm just going to explain a very basic way that MTG should be balanced, so people understand how shit WotC is at game design.

Burn should count to 20. With a starting grip of 7 cards and good draws, it should be able to count to 20. It's that simple.

If burn can count to more than 20, it is broken. The game should be balanced so burn does not have overkill damage without being stretched thin.

Between Ramunap, manlands, SSS, Mice, impulse draw etc. modern Burn/aggro decks reliably have 15-30 points of overkill damage at their disposal, without having to sacrifice anything consistency to get it. (Combo decks tend to sacrifice consistency for those explosive one-shots.) If you've ever tried to play a life gain deck in the current absolute fucking state of things, you'd understand how big a problem this is. You could gain 20 life over the course of the game and still trivially die to burn. When the primary means to counter degenerate single-focus decks simply doesn't exist because of how efficient said decks are, you have a problem. This is bad design. This is bad balance. WotC is shit and should fix their game.

That's why they introduced brackets. So you could still be confused about whether or not it's a sweaty tryhard format, but now you get to have four separate banlists and an excuse when you pubstomp people.

Because the playtest version was 0 mana and drew if it LTB'd for any reason. Unfortunately R&D actually caught that one or we would have had Bagel and Schmear as an Affinity staple.

Why doesn't WotC just do what they tell Commander and D&D players to do, and remove the banlist before telling players to self-regulate? It works so well in those games, so why don't they apply it to all formats?

also it doesn't make much sense to say "self-regulate but also stick to our arbitrary cut-off points for specific card pools", if people are gonna do their own thing they don't need formats

True. WotC can just abolish formats so everyone can play their favorite cards all the time if they want. Plus self-regulation naturally catches any design mistakes so if WotC "accidentally" prints an overtuned mythic that shoots up to $200 because it rotated Vintage they can always fall back on telling players to self-regulate.
If WotC is going to say competitive play doesn't matter then Lurrus never needed an errata or ban, because players can self-regulate!

Eh, Gonti is still a crimelord who's implied to be the cause of a lot of problems, just isn't AS bad as one might think. Erebos is also ultimately still a bit of a self-serving asshole, he's only 'aligned' with Elspeth and such because she opposes Heliod.
And with a quick look at mono-white Legends... Akroma I think is arguably villainous in a self-righteous way? Same for Radiant. Honestly not a lot of mono-white villains, but it's just easier to have them alongside a different colour.
