I vastly prefer SS but they really need to spice up ascension to make it more interesting sooner rather than later, not that I expect anything instantly but it'd be a massive shame if they just left it as-is. Branching paths (and possibly the option to do actually hard bits to get greater rewards alongside them), more interesting events, more varied room/encounter design, maybe a big pool of general cards like the survivor ones so you have more options in your run without them having to add more to each individual character (could even have those apply only while you're in the monolith and disappear when you make the record so they don't have to worry about them getting too broken), more bosses to select from instead of it being the same ones every time, etc.. There's a lot of potential and ascension runs are already ahead of a lot of the gacha roguelite stuff I've seen in some other games but they really need to work on harnessing said potential to get it all the way there

Yeah it kind of gets in the way of things, I'd love for them to eventually add an alternate mode that's more focused on just being fun eventually
