Don't use track-shift modules until you are absolutely certain about who you want to play and what weapon you want to use with them. Those are the only materials you can really "brick" your account with. For everything else you can grind.
Don't dump all your papers on unlocking multiple copies of the same character to power them up. You want to unlock as many different characters as you can and level them all.
Fishing is stupidly efficient for getting materials but it has limited rewards.

That's it. Other than keeping those things in mind just play the game.

When does this game get any good? I've just beat the first boss and met the slutty demon boy who stole my crystal mcguffin.

Considering the number of characters/weapons which are easily available right now you can full augment more than enough to cover all realistic needs. Yes it's not a long-term solution but in the process of doing this you'll get a ton of cubes which can be turned into more.

It's clearly not something you're intended to focus on immediately. It's supposed to be passively progressed while you farm new characters/introns and weapons/smelts. If you're trying to farm shifts while you still have easy access to ascends you're a fucking retard.

This varies from character to character. If a skill is literally nothing but "do instant damage" then it likely isn't impacted at all. If the skill applies a buff of some kind then the duration is increased.
