Really Pokemon's battle system, in concept, is pretty good. Status ailments actually matter, there's a good variety of abilities, and field effects. In reality it just needs an extreme update. The constant text boxes make combat so fucking slow and yet a bunch of really important mechanics are still poorly explained. How many casual players even know getting paralyzed nerfs your speed? Why is there so much focus on doubles from a balance perspective and yet 99% of the main campaign, the thing that teaches you about the game, are singles? And even then the main campaign doesn't properly teach you how singles work.
