Engine has to be big enough to do truck stuff. Small trucks have to meet tighter emissions standards so the engine needs to be smaller and you can’t tow/haul shit. Put the same engine in a bigger truck and it meets the emissions standards for bigger trucks. The regulations got rid of the small truck + powerful engine combo.

Also, cash 4 clunkers got rid of affordable used cars and trucks so now used car and new car prices are higher and smaller trucks are mostly gone.
