It is a great delusion. One could also wonder in amazement at the incredible oddities that some people who proclaim themselves to be "Christians" believe and practice. Apart from God, the Holy Spirit, the "Spirit of Truth" you can convince yourself of anything, or be convinced of anything. You don't have an anchor, all you have is your own opinion, which as often as flights of fancy take hold (for most people being several times a day, even multiple times an hour) can take you in any direction and through any emotion at all.
This is not a point of pride about being superior to talmudic jews or schismatic christians. It is a profound sadness, and we must pray for them. And give thanks to the Lord because we would be no different without His mercy in safeguarding us from heresy.
