In the Quran, ghayrah is the principle that men must act on jealousy, especially a man’s protectiveness over his love’s chastity. They must never bend the knee or allow themselves to be humiliated in service or subjugation to another man.
Sahih al-Bukhari; Sahih Muslim:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Do you feel astonishment at Sa’d's jealousy? By Allah, I have more ghayrah than he does, and Allah has more ghayrah than I do.
Because of Allah’s intense ghayrah, He forbade all forms of indecency — whether done openly or secretly.
And there is no one who loves to see the indecent repent more than Allah. That’s why He sent prophets to guide and warn the indecent.
And no one is more protective and jealous over Man’s honor than Allah — and that is why He forbade sexual immorality.”
