CS combat feels pretty good, very challenging but not punishingly so if you plan ahead and build well. It's very consumable oriented, grenades and meds are pretty much critical for serious fights.
It's very beautiful too, though granted, comparing it to Dungeon Rats/AoD is a very low bar.

For pistols I just pumped initiative so I always went first, and then abused cloaking fields so I could drop consecutive fan hammers for 2 turns straight. It carried me through pretty much the entire game.
I can't comment on how they measure up to other weapons, but it was reliable and fun in my experience.
