Despite the difficulty of last thread's challenge, the engagement was relatively high, including some new people. Regardless, I think we're due for something shorter/easier. I like this wad because it makes the old Perdition's Gate textures actually look good.

Well, he is autistic (not saying that as an insult, he is diagnosed). That's the deal with source port programmers on Doom community. They are talented and are proud of it, but lack a lot of social skills, so they are pain in the ass to engage with. Same thing with Graf and Kraf.
Anonymous No.11960528 >>11960563
>>11960507
The compatibility for this one is 2 (vanilla). That number represents the engine the wad was theoretically built for. Usually the textfile will specify it, but you can also see that others are recording for this map under cl2 on the archive. The majority of complevels never get used, they're just for historic conservation. Read this if you wanna know more:
https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Compatibility#Compatibility_levels
Anonymous No.11960551 >>11960563
>>11960507
The easiest way to check the complevel is to check the doomwiki for the wad.
You can also open the text file thatcomes with the wad. The first line usually is "Advanced engine needed" and it will say none for vanilla or boom for boom etc.

Cyber takes around 20 hits with the SSG on boom and that takes ~28 seconds
With the RL it takes about 45 rockets and is roughly 2 seconds faster.

I finally beat Hexen as Fighter a few days ago, then ran through it again as Cleric in about half the time. I'm still on Hub 1 as Mage, but I'll probably take a hiatus before I get completely burnt. My unsorted thoughts:

-The game is very short if you figure out what to do quickly/get lucky with chosen routes. The length came from me exploring and killing everything.
-Centaurs/Slaughtaurs are significantly less annoying than I was led to believe, although sitting there and gassing them is tedious.
-The armor system makes little sense to me and should've just been Doom/Heretic style.
-Obtaining the fourth weapon happens a lot faster than I'd expect, and finding the final piece is a bit anticlimactic, what with it just sitting in the corner of some basement.
-The commonality/rarity of certain inventory items is nonsensical.
-Dark Bishops seem highly aggressive and will try attacking the player through solid walls, so you'll constantly be hearing them firing while exploring around.
-Wendigos are criminally underused.
-Elemental damage is also criminally underused. I avoided using certain weapons against enemies until realizing they'd take damage all the same.
-I thought Heresiarch was lame at first, turns out I got really lucky in my two fights against him. Meeting him again the second time, he was a lot more resilient and I actually got to see the stuff he did. He's neat.
-Korax might be a tough boss. I wouldn't know, as I had a stack of invulnerabilities and mana refreshers, and spent the whole fight nuking everything that moved without thinking.
-People say Cleric is the best, but I think that's only true for his Wraithverge. Serpent staff and Firestorm sucked at killing them, and made me miss the axe.

The initial wow factor is gone, but I'm still liking it. Here's my question: what comes next? Deathkings? Heretic II? Hexen II?

I forgot to specify using those weapons against centaurs. Trying to leech them makes their shields reflect the damage back which causes poison for some reason. The firestorm apparently deals most of its damage after initial contact, which they'll already be blocking.

Deathkings has no new assets but has better designed levels that are generally easier to navigate but harder to survive.
Iirc you don't ever fight Korax, but you do fight 4 wyverns on the same map.
I would say vanilla has generally more memorable locations and Deathkings iirc has a really shitty room with Guardian of Steel textures and a bunch of enemies in cages.
Wendigos are also featured heavily in one map but I think it's a secret one.
One really shitty thing in Deathkings is that all normal enemies can now repopulate the map, not just Ettins.

Hexen 2 is for some reason praised but I feel it's inferior in many ways to Hexen. More organic puzzles, but the art style is very drab and generic by comparison, instead of looking like a heavy metal cover the game's hubs are Not-Europe, Not-Aztec, Not-Egypt, Not-Rome, and the uglyness and weird proportions of early 3D also bring it down a bit. You can swim now and there are lots of destructible environments and objects, but it is also way too fast imo (uses Quake's pace).

Couldn't get Heretic 2 to run properly.

They're not as seemingly extensive as Heretic's (I've yet to try what they've done) but there are some in Hexen. Most notably are the cleric getting a shield parry and some mage rebalancing: The frost shards seem to deal more damage and can go through frozen enemies, and the mage's ultimate weapon no longer has homing projectiles. Strange stuff.

Anyway, I think I'm pretty cozy with Quake mapping now. Not sure the textures I'm using are all that good, but for what it's worth I'm having a lot more fun making rooms than I imagined.
The entry barrier is there, what broke t for me was having someone suggested I select a vanilla map and delete its walls. After that you can see just how close to Doom the layouts can be - helped out a lot in order to visualize what I wanted to make.

Railgun was Sponge's (Bethesda's guy) decision though. I'm not sure but I think Map-Center Jams mod this back to it's original form or then I'm just imagining it. At least it seems to be able to two-shot Icaruses again.

Anyway Q2 is one of their better remasters, which's major problems seem to be caused by Bethesda. Paril (Nightdive guy) wanted to add psx campaign, Zaero and horde mode, but Bethesda doesn't allow patches anymore. But at least he finished the psx campaign as a mod (along with the finished remastered models for the 2 psx exclusive stroggs), Map-Center is converting Zaero, and I'm not sure what happened to horde mode. I'm howerer glad that Q2R exists because it resurrected Q2's modding scene and now we are getting cool stuff like Call Of The Void and Return To Perdition.

And if you look at Korax's sprites, his face lacks them. But then the concept art in the kex vault shows Korax with the head of his sprite and the wall face, so who knows. Poor guy so that's understood, though the post in the last thread also made it sound like he was getting fed up with the mapcenter discord shenanigans.
And yeah Sponge sucks, and it's weird that "a Willits" will always curse the Quake games in some way, but the end result are three different Kex'd up shooters having nerfed versions of some of my favorite weapons. It was a great game. You know had fun. Liked that you could go back through the big ass levels. Got lost a few times. Some secrets were useful others werent worth looking for. I did wall hump e. Looked around got a bunch. First half had like 12 a area or more towards the end it was like 5 or 6. Also played on medium so idk. Nothing i disliked really besides the you have X secrets but it was cool like theres still shit to do kinda even tho there isnt any enemies but each other i probably had ten or so left. Maybe they wandered off. Kinda like a lost soul in doom gets lost and its counted as a enemy in gz doom idk. Liked the bosses would like more slaughter style maps like the last level minus the dropping balls in the hole spot. Not saying massive levels with enemies but that small arena shoot out was cool. The whole game was good. Some secrets felt obscure others useless but found a good amount so maybe thats why I always had good ammo and stuff. There was a few platforming sections I just no clipped through. Just dont care much for it any more. Trying to jump from box to box. Like the section with the blue barrels and the fans. I wqs like fuck it im no clipping you know. Not every one is like that but I kinda am. Overall a great game for sure Liked the enemies second half of the game had less bow enemies those guys are kinda cool. Most challenging enemy is the guy who charges at you with metal arms. The guys who shot rockets never felt cheap cause theyre glass cannons. Hell yeah the pistol in the game feels good and the auto aim felt kinda necessary in alot.of situations with the little spiders desu

Which devs? The original ones didn't get squat anyway, but at least if I didn't have the games I wouldn't support Nightdive either by buying them.

To reiterate so that you monkeys can understand:
>Nightdive gives me their crappy port for "free"
>I now show up on their list of total owners, same with everyone else that got them
>Because of this they have a highly inflated number of total owners
>They then use said number in marketing and for negociating deals with other IP holders for future "remasters"
>They slowly gain more and more projects which means that they would own a pretty large chunk of the market so anyone who has any interest in this genre of games will most likely end up giving them money at some point or will inevitably contribute indirectly to their financial success.

Did you fight Menilkir in that final room? It sounds like the final room of "Hub of Pain" by Colin Caird: It's also a large square room lined with stained glass windows that lead to a long drop to the swamp below.
The only real hangup is that "Hub of Pain" is a multi-level hub and the last level doesn't exactly simulate climbing a tower.

You people are fucking retarded.
I've had the games since roughly 2001 and I've only ever used the original executables or source ports, that's not the point at all.

The point is that I also owned them digitally before the Kex ports, so I retroactively got assigned a license for the Kex ports.
I didn't want to get the Kex ports, but they were given to me as a "free kindness" so now I show up on Nightdive's sales figures.
This also means that if e.g. my nephew wants to play these games and he makes a Steam/ GOG account to buy them, he also gets the Nightdive port, even if I recommend ditching it in favor of source ports.
In the second scenario, my nephew pays Nightdive and also increases their sales figures.
I paid them diddly squat but they turned me into a billboard for their company, just like they will with anyone that has ever owned or will ever own any of these games.
If you can't see the issue, you are fucking retarded.

>Darkness Falls
>so many encounters you needed to fall back through the door you entered just because no room to fight multiple barons of hell in
>there was some normal fights that were fine but far too many - I need to cheese this with doorway exploits so I don't take damage at all
>3 cyber demon fights in with no plasma weapons
>used Eraser weapons for it cause I saw it had no weapon edits - felt mostly balanced aside from being able to cheese Revenants a bit more easily
>have to constantly use my flashlight mod due to poor lighting
>doesn't inform me that I need to have jump/free look enabled
>too many barons and even though it was only 3 maps long I felt it went on too long

>Insanity's Edge
>Ok I really should not have used Doom Incarnate's Bloodrayne for this
>completely trivialized everything - that 24 round shotgun with a scope is so GOOD
>breath of fresh air though after not getting a plasma weapon till the end of Darkness Falls
>fights were definitely better tho - more room to maneuver and better monster placement
>I ended up using Bloodrayne's night vision for most of the mod due to poor lighting
>I didn't get a plasma till near the end of map 1.
>the platforming sections near the end of map 1 over the insta kill lava was aids

>Winter's Fury
>story isn't full of typos and bad english - prior 2 wads both had major issues with both
>better paced shorter levels with smaller monster counts than prior games (around 150-170 on the non boss maps)
>takes most of your ammo, armor, health between each level for balancing
>still get a sense of progression - get a plasma way sooner than prior 2 mods and enemies I need it for at the same time
>better boss fights so far
>only one story section where the lighting was an issue (pic related) but not enough to warrant flashlight mod usage

If you are seeing an issue with everyone getting the remaster for free of charge, you are the one who's retarded, buddy.

Why the fuck would giving money to Nightdive be any worse than giving money to Microsoft or Bethesda. Original id didn't get money from your and your nephew's pre-remaster Steam/GoG purchases either. If you would be anti-corpo guy that would be understandable, but you are trend contrarian straight out from /v/. Ready to support all big corporations, but not the ones that aren't trendy with the /v/ boys. It's sickening crap that you see all over 4chan. All megacorpo shit = good, but gotta resist the smaller stuff with cult following, because you need to larp some villain. Grow the fuck up.

And yes, you don't actually play these or at least their mods, so this why you seem like a tourist. Q2 modding scene was 99,99% dead before the release of remaster. I like Q2 mods, and I need the remaster to play the newest ones, so I see it as a big fucking positive thing that I didn't need to pay for the remaster to play the mods. If you actually played Q2 mods too, you wouldn't complain.

And yes, I don't think Nightdive is perfect. They have done stupid shit and some bad remasters. But acting like they are the source of all evil is just retarded faggotry. If Nightdive would have remastered Kingpin, it wouldn't be that unplayable bug-ridden piece of shit. Yet I don't see anyone of you trend faggots complaining about that.

>kooky humor the build games are known for
An overwhelmingly large majority of that comes directly from the main characters themselves, disabling that character chatter really sets a different tone. Barring some outliers like the farting sumo or maybe the pig cops, all the enemies are treated somewhat seriously.
The above does not apply to Redneck Rampage: The most fun you can have in that game comes after installing the cuss pack, though it's also not as well regarded or known as the other three.
>World building is too sterile and boring which affects all the characters. Army of men in cloaks with grandeur plans for world domination?

>Why the fuck would giving money to Nightdive be any worse than giving money to Microsoft or Bethesda.

Because the $20 I gave Bethesda 10 to 15 years ago barely makes an impact, it's not enough to cover daily toilet paper expenses. Bethesda and Microsoft don't need Doom or Heretic to be massive corporations, they don't care about the IP at all and would've been just fine with keeping the original versions running in Dosbox until the end of time.

Now I got autists with highly inflated egos literally changing and breaking the games in substantial ways, getting paid for it, becoming more succesful by giving out their shitty products just to be able to claim better outreach, all while being praised by retards like you, turning them into the defacto authority over how things should be.

Nightdive doesn't care about the $15 bucks either, they probably negociate deals with the IP holders to get paid for porting the games, not in royalties so that's why they give them out for free and abandon every project after 1 month. All of it by forcing some poor game to run in Kux and re-using cut content that they didn't make or fan content that they did make for free but never released.

Bethesda or Atari or whatever barely make a profit out of this but they don't care either because it's still more lucrative for them to let Nightdive shit all over a game instead of letting it rot.

And Quake 2 would've had mods if anyone bothered with source ports for it, IIRC Yamagi was the only one actively used or supported.

This is mostly with its fourth episode, feeling particularly silly and goofy compared to the other three - especially with that Randy Pitchford level opener. Alien World Order only really gets like that with its first level.
Shadow Warrior will also have occasional fun level details like Leap’s place and other easter eggs, but like Duke its similarly a small fraction of its gametime. Even Redneck Rampage has an occasional strange mood when you disable the music.

Requiem's secret MAP31, Doorway To Quake, is a loving recreation of Quake's E1M6, Gate To Cthton. I believe it was partially motivated by someone telling Iikka Keränen that such a level could not be made in Doom 2, but I don't remember where I got that from, so it could be me mistaking it with something else.

Gate To Chthon is a good level, one of those maps which make me really appreciate American McGee as a mapper, along with The Crusher and Hell Beneath.
Hell Beneath in particular is a REALLY rock solid match for Romero's Perfect Hatred, they pair so goddamn well, E4M1 is small, tense, and really starves you, then E4M2 starts you in the frying pan and hurriedly tips you into the fire. The last level was so stringent it doesn't particularly help to carry over stuff, you're pretty likely to be worse off than if you pistol started.

Atari (actually Infogrames who bought Atari's remains to wear as a disguise), want to make money, but they don't want to take too much risk with investment, so they figure they'll do something pretty low risk by instead getting a small studio to dust off and port an old game which has a reputation and cult following.
That's a cheap venture, game is already made and requires little to no new asset work (and certainly not large or expensive kinds when it actually does), and with a bit of promotion through YouTubers and other social media avenues, the project will make some profit. Not humongous profits, but probably at least decent revenue for the money spent.

Not inherently the worst thing ever, particularly as these aren't sold for a full $60 either, and having modern compat versions can be appreciated (look at how fucking dire it was for ROTT and its neglected sourceports).
However, when you look at Nightdive in particular, they are known to not finish their jobs properly and they don't think it's particularly necessary to do either (it was them who declined working further on Blood, contrary to myth), and occasionally they take creative liberties which not everyone appreciates.

I never played the original but it seems like he kinda just loosely drew over the original. Monster numbers and map design is far more modern (usually around a hundred enemies on every map outside of boss maps) than Temple of the Lizard Men 2 which has very few enemies (less than 50) and the maps are just very basic.

https://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2013/10/temple-of-lizardmen-lmtemplewad.html

The truth is that Romero sucks at level design. His maps are largely shit outside of a small handful and he has trouble adhering to his own dogmas, such as "if the player can see an area, they should be able to reach it" -- a rule he breaks in the very first fucking level of the game (see: the outdoor area near green armor).

He probably thought, "what if I like, put an Imp down there, and the player can't see it... that'll surprise them, haha...", and that was the full extent of his dude weed-tier thought process. He didn't consider that it would just become an annoyance on repeat playthroughs, because his levels are designed around visual flair instead of good gameplay. Unfortunately, the gimmicks were only fun the first time, and as a result the majority of his levels have aged like cum.
