I've come to realize that the player being a diegetic element of the stories (beyond just being an Earthbound reference) is actually a good thing, the idea that the protagonist can occupy such opposite extremes of morality (pacifist vs. genocide/weird route) is nonsensical from an in-universe standpoint, but the player being the middleman that forces different paths works much better
