You have to remember that a lot of dev time isn't even spent making the game but translating it, bugfixing, consoles ports, testing those ports for bugs and so on. toby's problem is that he's a terrible programmer and did chapter 1 almost entirely by himself with no thought to how the systems would progress with the game, so the whole thing ended up being kind of a jury-rigged monstrosity.

Emphasising how well-written it is, it's completely earnest in what it does. It's just the fun gang playing 3D sonic levels as if they were Dark Worlds without the RPG mechanics. There's no meta bullshit, no secret genocide route, you just get to have a fun time with some really nice in-character dialogue. I still don't think the Knights patterns are that hard. There were definitely some chapter 4 combination attacks from random enemies that felt more undodgable
The only hard attack is the horisontal sword attack. The rotating one is actually so much easier, I swear it's the hitboxes or something
