Wacky cartoonists these days are regulated to the modern SpongeBob mines cause no other cartoon wants to be wacky, fluid, or expressive for budgetary reasons. IIRC Dylan King, a board artist on modern SpongeBob, once said that tons of animators he knows struggle to find jobs with their artstyles.

We do have a couple of wacky indie toons, but unfortunately it seems like people prefer loreshit, but who knows, a renaissance might happen for them eventually.

The animation looks good for a modern cartoon, but the biggest flaw is how style over substance modern SB is. Honestly, the best post-movie season was season 11, tons of banger episodes and a great balance between good animation and good writing, it’s likely because Hillenburg returned to work on the show around that time before his passing. After season 11 SpongeBobs writing gradually worsened.

Sure the animation and art direction is great and experimental, but it’s sad to see how Spumco-inspired animators are regulated to the SpongeBob mines cause no other cartoon these days has the budget to allow for that kind of style. If you want to know what modern SpongeBob looks like without the good animation then look no further than to Kamp Coral, which is unironically worse than the Paul Tibbitt era episodes.
