I find it funny how people blame Maekawa on Tails becoming more technology focused when not only was that NOT a Maekawa invention (Tails built a whole spaceship in Fighters) but also his flanderization happened in Sonic X and only started affecting the games in Unleashed onwards which was written by Kiyoko Yoshimura, a person who actually wrote for Sonic X unlike Maekawa who served as a "supervisor" (we don't know what that actually entailed. Maekawa was in the US during Sonic X's first season and Prime was also "supervised" by Sonic Team and look how that turned out)

Also Tails being a genius and rivaling Eggman is cool and follows on his arc of SA1 very well when Eggman didn't really take Tails seriously, to SA2 where Tails directly rivals Eggman. Tails was always an inventor and prodigy, there's nothing stopping him from being a mechanical genius AND being physical

I have my issues with Maekawa but this nonsense that he "ruined" Tails' character always seemed very bad faith
