In a weird way we should all be grateful to Taylor Swift because she was the canary in the coal mine that let the league know their golden boys were actually widely despised villains.
Their plan was clearly to have her make guest appearances at as many games as possible to promote her tour and recruit swifties to football games but they mistakenly assumed people would just lose their shit unconditionally and engage in mindless idolatry like what normally happens when Taylor goes anywhere. And instead people stared heaping scorn on her. They hated the Chiefs so fucking much that instead of Taylor making them more likeable the association with the Chiefs made her hateable and just amplified all the negativity surrounding the Chiefs and the obvious plan to refball them to a "historic" threepeat. The league wanted that storyline so, so badly. The fact that they abandoned it at the last second indicates that their internal Chiefs-related metrics must have been overwhelmingly negative. Like, "15% of the fanbase might quit the sport if this happens" negative.
I guess they figured them just being in the owl was enough exposure and they didn't need to risk outright revolt if they cheesed the owl the same way they cheesed all those one-score games. Given how much worse the Chiefs were than the Eagles they would have had to drop the act entirely and make like 20 completely fraudulent calls just to keep it close. The NBA would have just done it anyway and told the fans to suck it but that's why basketball is a second-rate sport. The NFL had juuust enough self-awareness not to show their ass when they knew everyone was on to their act and pissed about it.
