There never was any other term in my native, and the prior system noted AD, but not pre-AD, which was confusing as fuck.
The only difference is that the equivalent of "C" went from capital letter to small letter, but it looked just weird with a capital letter in the end.
So I guess - another episode of English language problems that only Anglophones have
