Dark Souls 2 needed desperately an engine that would alter and diversify enemy hit reaction, and a more dynamic combat where both player and enemies would attack more and interrupt each other.
Dark Souls 2 is a bastard middle child with genes of retardation, even in the rare case where a map develope vertically, it somehow manages to make zero use of it because it is more concerned with placing dudes conveniently petrified right before passages and chests
