your hot take is wrong because the unusual control scheme and the jump-cancel system makes for a unique and interesting fighting game. unlike a 2d fighter, virtual on has nearly unlimited technical depth without relying on combos, but isn't oversimplified like a party fighter. the robots feel like robots, have mass and take time to do things which encourages the player to think ahead and not waste actions/ it is impossible to win a game of virtual-on by button mashing. it's is easily one of the best fighting game series ever made, if not the single best giant robot fighting game of all time.
