I do think it genuinely is some kind of autism schizoid disorder, usually leading to some kind of obsession. People who spend their whole days obsessing over other "characters" in the thread, basing their entire lives on the drama that unfolds there. It's just people with no real hobbies or interests and they get off to this weird kind of parasocial relationship. It's not like the kind of parasocial where a guy donates $10 to a streamer so he can say his name, but it's probably not that different. They want (you)s, they are desparate for attention, and they will do whatever it takes to get it. They may not be donating money, but they are dedicating a lot of TIME to have their name mentioned and to become the center of discussion. For them it's not about the game or whatever the general is about. It's about hijacking the thread and making it about them and their nonsense. Histrionic disorder? narcissism? Is it the dark triad psychopath tendencies with multiple disorders in one? Sometimes it sure seems like that. Jannies are effectively powerless to do anything about them because bans roll off schizos like water. They're so easy to evade and there are even sites dedicated to just ban evading on 4chan now, it's gotten pretty bad.
On one hand I find it fascinating, but more often than not it's just disturbing that people live like this and devote their entire lives to being the thread "schizo". Do they have a say in the matter? Were they always destined to be some sort of schizoid junkyard dog? It's all so strange.
