the main problem with pokemon is they're glorified merch ads. any daring, enterprising ideas are promptly shot down by corporate. what's more, since the series has to adhere to (((international standards))) from all parts of the world, anything remotely "offensive" is cut off. they literally can't make dieting jokes or references and allusions to anything, lest a single country doesn't get it

the digimon/partner dynamic is shown through actual characters. while the protagonist is just a blank slate, they have other characters that get scenes with their partners showing their development, like nokia and agumon and gabumon, himari and her angewomon, kouta and his guilmon, mameo and his mugendramon, and inori and aegiomon
they seem to be keeping the protagonist a mime intentionally to avoid favoritism. something tells me that there'd be quite a lot of backlash if they picked a protagmon like the joker games did with the incarnus
