Because they've always been relatively bad games that I was only really playing for the monster collecting aspect and to play with my brothers as well, but the newer titles have degraded so much in quality, effort and gameplay while Nintendo and TPC themselves have also become drastically more immoral and anti-consumer as well. The few good aspects don't outweigh the horrible parts anymore basically, and I don't want to support garbage developers.

Around 13 yo with R/S/E. Skipped everything up to BW2 because a college friend insisted it was great. It was. But then I tried XY when it came out and was disappointed. Never played pokemon ever since.

sapphire / ruby remakes (after skipping everything between platinum and them). I only like collecting pokemon and exploring the world, I despise battling and the entire leveling / combat system. After however many decades I was still not allowed to complete a pokedex, not allowed to start a second save / NG+, the game still offered no challenges, etc. No improvement despite all the room and time to do so, I gave up on it

Last time I actually bought one was X, last one I actually played was Sun when it leaked here. The writting was on the wall when gen 6 dropped, and it was clear it was over when they cut BF in ORAS.

Gen 2 to 3 was already a downgrade, removing things like the day-and-night cycle and ONLINE (mobile GB), only bringing something substantial with Emerald. But Gen 4 was the start of the complete downward trend with the SHITO framerates and the designs starting to feel uninspired or like they don't fit, whereas Gen V felt like fakemon. I never finished Gen V.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were the last Pokémon games I played and enjoyed.
Despite that I played both X & Y, Sun & Moon, and thought both of them were dog shit and haven't been back since. I'm a big Pokémon fan too, love Pokémon, that whole lore leak? Amazing. Fantastic. Loved participating and consuming Pokémon material again, but the base games are fucking awful and I'm not putting up with it anymore.

I was really disappointed by gen 3, since it removed a lot of pokemon, a lot of features, a lot of locations. It removed a lot of stuff. But I stuck with it even though it was a lot worse than what had come before.

But then Gen 4 also did the same thing and by that point I had to accept that they were just phoning it in and putting out a crap product since they could get away with it. So I lost interest.

Way down the line I picked up X and Y but those were seriously embarrassing, some of the worst 3D environments I've ever seen in a game. They made gen 3 and 4 feel effortful. And on top of that they added a bunch of handholding on-rails garbage that I thought took away from the appeal that previous games had.

Gamefreak really are incredibly incompetent. The quality is just so low.

This. The initial burst of SV was the same fun I've always had with a new pokemans, but then quickly came the burnout. Eventually took me months to actually finish and I realized this was gonna be my last Pokémon game. Had a small hope for AZ because I enjoyed Arceus, but TPC/GF proudly flaunting that stuttering ps2 slop was the last straw. They'll never change.

I don't know if this is a hot take but conceptually I was okay with Dexit. The reason I hate Dexit now is because the reason for it turned out to be lies. If it was actually about improving the animations and fidelity of all of the Pokémon that made it, I think the anger would've been far less. But SwSh ended up being a glorified 3DS game.

Played Red/Blue and Gold/Silver as a kid. I tried playing Ruby/Saphire but stopped after a couple of gyms. I guess I grew out of it.

I played Scarlet/Violet when it came out because not only me but my wife also was hyped for the whole open world gimmick. Being able to play a 3D open world Pokemon game on the TV was the “dream” of pretty much every body I know or knew that played Red/Blue.

Had mixed feelings. Performance and graphics issues aside, the game didn’t really feel that open world with all the handholding.

It's the same game every time.
It was ok the first 3 times around but I don't need to play anymore of them and I can just go online if I need to masturbate to Lopunnies, Laprases and Nidoqueens.

I started with platinum, it had lots of cool mons at the start of the game, like infernape and luxray. Loved it.
Heart gold had feraligatr, 2 regions worth of content and the pokewalker.
Black had... Fat pig? Moe blob? Pidgeon and dog? Lame elemental apes? But the game was still pretty ok even without cool mons.
Black 2 was made way better, however it was the same exact region as black (which i just finished) so it was actually not memorable and thus meh.

Sun/Moon LITERALLY induced me to sleep, I fell asleep while playing it, first and only time it has ever happened to me in any game I ever played.

The game was so fucking easy and boring and the handholding was so forced and extended, I literally closed my eyes and went to sleep with the console on and the game running.

They removed a good chunk of my favorite pokemon in that game too since it lacks the full dex, I beat it and decided that I will NEVER play another mainline pokemon game, and so I did I never touched Sun/moon 2, sword and whatever the new ones are called purple and scarlet I think, didn't play legends Arceus either and definitely won't play the new legends game either, I felt so betrayed by sun/moon that all my love turned into hatred and after playing other monster catching games I opened my eyes, never to return to pokemon.

I started with RBY and played Gold/Silver but skipped Crystal because my older siblings didn't have it and I was basically playing hand me downs

Same with Ruby/Sapphire but then I got Emerald for myself which was my first very own Pokemon game(and still my favorite to this day). I also got Leaf Green a bit after.

Same with Pearl version and then I got into piracy with a flashcard and played Platinum, HGSS, BW, and BW2 right when they came out.

Palworld and Pokemon are not the same type of game, though. Palworld isn't even pretending to be a pokemon game instead of a full-on ark clone, it's really just taking the aesthetics of it and stuffing it into Craftopia.

Pokemon fans want the slow, easy-going pace of Pokemon games where time seems to stop when the player stops advancing, nothing really has any stakes, and the biggest inconvenience is having to go back to the last Pokemon center.

If they made a Pokemon game that combined elements of Animal Crossing into it, visiting a town, doing chores, setting up camps, owning a home, that game would sell trillions. It's what I think they want to do with Legends Z-X but nothing has really indicated that they have a clear vision or goal on how to accomplish that. Turned-based gameplay wasn't my thing as a kid, and now that I've become accommodated to turn-based gameplay, I can't stand the general half-assed cheap shit Pokemon games have devolved into.

I absolutely think Palworld elements should be incorporated into pokemon itself.
Not the "survival crafting" aspect necessarily.
But the way you interact with pokemon. Seeing them in the world (which they are doing now), the way you catch them and freely call them out.
I don't think it should necessarily go the direction of animal crossing exactly, but I do think the "comfyness" of pokemon's world is a major appeal and something they do need to actually tap into more. But its something thats better captured in artwork more than the games themselves. Both official and fanmade art.
Legends ZA seems like it'll be enjoyable, but still won't quite capture that aspect of pokemon that I feel most of the games have been missing.

I mean I get wanting things to sync up. And honestly they have so much goodwill from normalfags that I think they could continue to ride out like that for a while longer sadly. But eventually that will catch up with them like it did for CoD. They should definitely slow down a little. Release a few side projects and let the main line team have more time to innovate and make something worth while.

They're operating from the assumption that new pokemon = sales. It's backwards. They need to make people fall in love with pokemon from the current gen, that's where the profit and the value proposition for the customer is. New generations need to be perfect more than they need to be on time. There is no harm in staying in one generation for longer to make sure the next one comes out right. If anything, it gives the current generation more time to breath and develop it's own identity.

Because I had already played the exact same game 3 gens in a row, and they were clearly not moving in a direction that would make it worth playing more of it.

They kept dumbing down the gameplay mechanics. I got half way through BW2 and downloaded the Emerald remake demo. The whole thing involved being given the counter type pokemon and one-shotting the enemy. There was an ice room in one of those last two games I played that basically had you going left, then up. Why include it at all? Whats the point of a cave if its basically a straight path with an unnecessary pokemon healing center in the middle? The game was basically a strategy/resource management game and they stripped out all of those elements completely. I never cared about the childish stories or the creatures themselves and that is the only focus the franchise seems to care about now.
Yes, I did enjoy the brutal mazes in the first couple of games. I love Eridanus too.

Gen 2 is a mishmash of half baked ideas cobbled together to make a barely functioning game. It's stuck between being a sequel to Gen 1, being an expansion pack and balance patch of Gen 1, and being its own thing, and it fails at all three. It is by far the most "HEY REMEMBER GEN 1???" game in the series (like moving Bill to Goldenrod, having Lance show up to save the day and walk you through beating up team rocket, having the "Indigo" Elite Four WITH AN OLD KANTO GYM LEADER, WOW, and then having the entirety of Kanto as a victory lap ending with you fighting Red is far worse than anything Kalos did), it relies far too heavily on Gen 1 Pokemon while deliberately hiding new ones (like sticking every single new Dark or Steel type not named Umbreon in Kanto or hiding them behind ridiculously obtuse mechanics like special headbutt trees), and the competitive metagame is even more unbalanced and centralized than Gen 1's (having more "viable" Pokemon doesn't change the fact that nearly everything is either running a fucking rest talk set, spamming curse, OR BOTH).
