Its not about getting hurt, it's about how he would feel. You can't really say people love you if they decide to harm/kill you the first and only time they get a damn weapon. And it's kind of implied that he likes them enough to cater to them and hear their part even if he disagrees and self imposes. if that trust is broken I doubt he would take it kindly from then on
He would be annoyed, he could get mad, he very likely will be offended and that could all push him into "okay, I HATE these guys" territory. Which could all start his own direct antagonization of the cast. Would love to see him shoot back but doubt that's where the plot is going
