I'd like to amend the idea that jax could be a runaway, because if he entered the circus at 22, then you can't really be a runaway if you're 4 years into being a legal adult. At best with that he'd have to have ran away before he was 18, which is possible, or he'd have to be declared a danger to himself and/or an at risk adult by a 3rd party, again possible, but all that would be a lot of backstory to keep track of.
There's also an idea that he could be a criminal and was hiding out in the abandoned building.

It's not necessarily that Ragatha's bad and Jax is good, but more that Ragatha in an attempt to force positivity on people never really gets to know and connect with anyone. She doesn't want to be alone but instead of being honest with her feelings she tries to prop herself up as "The Nice One" in the hopes that it's enough. Jax is an unabashed asshole but clearly can't handle the script being flipped on him and seems to have had some level of tragedy occur as well.
