I get the feeling that all the "human" characters aren't real people, only impressions of the minds of real people who put on the headset to enter the circus, which is why they have memories, but can't remember their own names. It would also explain why Caine has trouble telling them apart from NPCs.
The appearance of each character reflects what the real person thinks about themselves.

Going with this tortured interpretation, Ragatha would view herself as her mother's doll, something without independence or deserving of real affection. Kinger might have been the project leader of the Digital Circus, making him the central piece. And Jax just perceives himself as Bugs Bunny, the guy who's too clever for everyone else. But this is really dragging the metaphor a thousand miles.
In any case, the only thing they lost is their names and faces. It's only a narrative caveat to sunder them from their previous lives. They're definitely real people.

Do people's bodies die as soon as they enter the Digital Circus? The biggest reason why people tend to hate on TADC is not even related to the show itself (content farms using the characters to churn out slop) and it's not nearly as preachy as SU. The most egregious thing in this regard I can think of is Zooble's dysmorphia shit, but I don't feel like it's substantial enough (the only instance of that I can recall is hotdiggedydemon being mildly annoyed when the subject came up in ep 3).

Since this isn't the first time Zooble has demanded Caine to give her the ability to have sex, let's say that while Caine does say no to Zooble's suggestion he decides to conduct an experiment to see how exactly sex feels like and secretly gives favors to whoever agrees to be his partner with benefits. Out of the small cast of characters which ones would Caine ask? I honestly think it would be Ragatha or Gangle, though preferably Ragatha.
