Hyper Sonic was a game mechanic that incentivized players to replay the game. Dark Sonic is just anime being anime. SS2 is a cheap form created to make the normies pog at "going back to the dark age!". SS2 was wholly unnecessary, the other 2 forms were just little nuggets for the fans to enjoy instead of something to legitimize. Hyper and Dark had no plot significance where SS2 did.
