I've tried it. Wraith/sage works in perfect synergy. But I was worshiping Horome without godwhoring, so I didn't have any serious healing or Itzpalt's mana boost.
The build is pretty solid anyway, though. If something can't kill you fast, you won't die no matter what. You can win any fight of attrition.
Wraith's small HP pool works as a shield if your pets have healing spells, even weak ones.
As a wraith, you have to save mana, but talismans let you spam high level spells as long as you have books to charge them. You also get double spell exp (but no casting exp).
Possible cons:
Without Itzpalt you have no way to quickly heal your mana. This is the biggest drawback by far. You don't get a Japanese themed revenant/ghost race and a Japanese themed katana-wielding spellsword class to worship some old dude who screwed everything up. You want your Japanese themed kitsune mother-wife.
Wraith has so little HP that it's much harder and more dangerous for you to train through overcasting, burning spells you don't need for stats and tanking overflow damage for magic capacity and armor training. I did it anyway.
Same with overworking. On the one hand, you have a lot of mana and any mana damage is halved on low hp (exhausted from crafting included), on the other - you can't restore mana while exhausted and healing pets can only heal your life which is pretty low.
Light eater 1 is ass, but not too bad, I guess.
