Something that helped me with faces were washes thinned with lahmian medium. It helps the wash go where you want it to and reduces coffee staining. A thin brown wash over everything then a thin purple/red wash over the eyes, ears and mouth goes a long way.
Also when you're painting eyes don't use pure white or black, tint them with your base skin colour. It'll make them look less cartoonish and bulging out

Very nice, I like in particular the five o'clock shadow. I used to be all helmets all the time but something clicked a while ago and now I can paint OK faces, but yeah they take way to long so only my characters get them
