Aside from knights and custodes, is there any other decently fun elite list armies? Haven't played this edition and I already have basically 4k points of DA. I know there's deathwing spam but I'm looking for a small new army or marine gimmick without spending a grand like knights would seemingly need.
Posted in /wip/, but getting back into the hobby after about 10 years away - decided to make a small Crimson Fists army (fists still need go be made crimson on these dudes.)

>>96295226Something that helped me with faces were washes thinned with lahmian medium. It helps the wash go where you want it to and reduces coffee staining. A thin brown wash over everything then a thin purple/red wash over the eyes, ears and mouth goes a long way.
Also when you're painting eyes don't use pure white or black, tint them with your base skin colour. It'll make them look less cartoonish and bulging out

>>96294789>>96294803GW is just flanderizing 40k at this point.
This is just the logical end point of Black Templars if you let a complete retard who has never read the actual lore within the codexes that came before, and then let the said retard write the said lore for the next ones.
People nowadays just see Black Templars as "deus vult desu vult" "kill psykers" "kill all mutants" "0,0001% genetic deviation detected, execute the mongrel"
Which is just a flanderizatoin of their character.
It's kinda like how Salamanders have become flanderized to an extent, but not as badly since Salamanders are pretty unpopular.
Lot of the time people view Salamanders now as "wholesome chungus" marines and whatever, when in reality, yes, Salamanders are friendly toward civilians and do what they can to protect them, but Salamanders are not strangers to war.
Meaning they understand the price you sometimes have to pay to protect greater good of the Imperium.
Like sometimes to protect more of the populace they will torch down an entire civilian crowd if they suspect there being something like genestealer cultists or people with some infectius plague, amongst the crowd.
They obviously would prefer not to do this, but they understand the potential danger this would pose if they let the people go through.

>>96294774 (OP)>TQ: army schemeThread-goers won't be interested but this was a recent discovery for me. I got a bunch of box sets including terminators and other stuff. Focussing on termis to "make a win first before the other 400 models". Since terminators are legacy units and will never ever be "Legends" I felt safe getting them. I am used to 4th edition one shot death termis and the numbers haven't changed since, if anything it's easier with 4shot rapid fire and 6-8 point guardsmen models rather than 5pt models.
Skipping to the why of their scheme; I wanted re-teleporting terminators. Looking through detachments and what they can be armed with, I ordered cyclone missile launchers and TH+Storm Shields to turn captains into. Lore made me want to be a Salamanders Successor. Terminator heavy requires me to use Dark Angels Rules.
So to introduce why they're mostly terminators as a "successor/young chapter" is around their homeworld(un-named). It's a perpetual storm world with volcanic nature that has tons of resources and volatile wildlife. Acid storms strip paint and floods are common. Making "torpedo cyclone missiles" a fun thought as they fight during a flood and then underwater. So with the theme of "Storm Bolters, Thunder Hammers, Storm Shields, Cyclone Missile Launchers" felt right with that background.
The storms would strip their chapter colors. They would have to be metal, and their icons and decals welded on in bi-metal appearances. All metal marines. They must teleport around to get place to place. They're successed by armor artistans, so they're on the higher end of Terminator Armor maint.
Being the keepers and protectors of the miners of their world, they tend to be rich in trading materials to get a defense fleet and equipment. As I expand the army, I'll write in more of why that stuff is there. It's just an open half blank book so far.

>>96295373Don't, he's a ritual poster
>>96295366>ran out of space to explain furtherNot sharing every detail of their lore here, still fiddling with to be honest.
For the terminators I settled on Vanguard Spearhead. Re-teleporting terminators make their rapid ingress strategem and many squad-specific teleport beacons/homers a fun theme.
The other strategems, plus the benefit of cover while outside 12" make for a durable army. The negative 1 to enemy AP guns strategem enhances their 2+ save. I honestly thought Centurions would be better, then I remembered what they are....
Their lore I believe will be a chapter of 700 max, due to high frequency of the higher ups watching them closely. Because I want to write in that they "lost 3 companies, details hinting they're alive" so they cannot recruit above 700 marines. Chapter master presumed lost, an acting chapter master will be in place.
For the additions eventually added, I'm flowing between 2 Armigers(box set) and storm speeders(for the weather puns I guess) but to continue their deep strike theme.
The other marines(infernus marines) may have arms/parts replaced. I will have lots of power swords left over from the terminator captains so they're getting turned into something with those weapons.
I'll be playing with the hot metal looks for the power weapons, power fists and such with the orange and purples using a airbrush.
>>96295378I think it's less about noblebright marines, and more about logic.
And speaking about secondaries, the new codex does looks like it's been written by secondary who only heard about Imperium's Khornates and Deus Vult memes.

>>96295506I like this theme as I have 3 metal warlocks and a metal farseer on my backlog
>>96295537I think it's fine if you've been planning it for a few months and the collage is what gets you to start working at it at the beginning of the month. I think the main idea is to just get people painting their stuff. Like grabbing a built model that's been collecting dust until the collage inspires you to commit feels like it's still in the spirit of the collage provided you haven't started painting yet
>>96295553Do they have some weapon option not available? You could still run a warlock today even if he's a little short. But it could still be a lot of fun to get people painting their lead if you leave it open ended like you're suggesting

>>96295127>deepstrike rulesWe have two Space Marine factions that have deepstrike as a major mechanic.
Gray Knights are the 'premier marine uppy downy' faction and Deathwatch use necron teleporters and have excellent deep strike strats. I know it can be frustrating to here "just proxy this as" but a Gray Knights army literally just captures that aesthetic perfectly.
Like, I am all for MORE content for 40k but this really just seems like not quite enough to for a full army. >>96295544You don't have to buy anything. There will be more themes and months. The collage is just supposed to be a fun thing, not something to pressure you into buying stuff. >>96295558Well you can still play metal warlocks and farseers, provided you base the warlocks up to 32mm. They mostly still have witchblades and singing spears.

Why is everyone in the community already talking almost entirely about 11th edition when it's almost a year out still? Is it always like this as soon as the last codex releases in an edition? People just instantly ready to jump to consume the next thing?

>>96296049People talk about it because there's nothing else to talk about.
The models are either good, ok or bad, and in general it is pointless to discuss about them because taste is subjective. One man's piece of shit is another man's favorite model ever.
The lore has nothing interesting and it's just majorly nothingburgers or so obvious "sequel baiting" that you know that it is pointless to speculate what an Y thing is because you know GW will just reveal what the shit is in the near future. Vashtorr is a good example of this.
Also doesn't help that most of the lore now is just
>"Imperium gets into a battle with X faction, both sides pour in man power and resources, Imperium in the end manages to push away the enemy in a brutal pyrrhic victory. But the X faction managed to achieve their secret goals in the conflict and retreat."Another big problem with lot of modern "warzones" in 40k is that GW is obsessed in trying to shove in as many retarded factions they can, which in the end just makes the conflict boring and grey mush without identity.
Pariah Nexus is a good example of this, people were fine with it just being a Imperium vs Xenos conflict, but then GW just shoves Vashtorr into it for no reason.

I know this because I am a zoanthrope IRL chilling in my library gym atm.
The other answer is that Chaos Mortals in 40k are synonymous with CSM, which is why Lost & Damned aren't their own army either.
>>96296312because people are more willing to spend money if they get physical things they can hold in their hands, and because if you sell a digital version it gets pirated and shared in full quality more easily for free outside of your control, and because if you had both a digital version and a physical version then the physical version would end up holding down the digital version from receiving more frequent and instant updates, erratas and faqs, anyway
the only way out is to turn the physical codex into something purely for artworks, fluff and pictures of models (not even painting guides) and to make the rules fully digital but still attached to that purchase

The amount of flat damage 3 weapons that hit with good consistency the new Votann can put out is fucking absurd. We're basically reaching the level of power creep we had with D2 with D3 now, some armies can basically just spam it entirely basically meaning anything under W4 is all the same to them.
>>96296500That premise is for humans, not tau.

Once one item is bought, no one else can buy it in a "thread," he says.
After an item has been chosen, the item it is GONE, for good!
He's probably literally crazy, but he has some neat nick-knacks.

>>96297031Eldar don't all have invulns
>>96296936>>96296970To expand:
Guardians wear mesh armour.
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Mesh_armour
Mesh Armour is formed of tens of thousands of individual pieces of thermoplas interwoven to produce a dense material resembling reptile scales or chainmail. It becomes momentarily rigid when hit, spreading force across a larger area, thereby reducing the damage. The thermoplas also disperses heat rapidly, giving reasonable protection against energy weapons. The material is psychically sensitive, automatically reacting to the wearer's movements and thoughts to maintain a glove-tight fit as they move and fight.
ASPECT ARMOUR
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Aspect_Armour
Aspect Armour is manufactured by the Eldar for use by their specialist Aspect Warriors. They use psychic engineering to construct a psycho-sensitive material which reacts instantly to movement by the wearer and moulds and reshapes itself to provide a tight fit, making it ideal for combat. It stiffens on impact much like Mesh Armour although it also includes further rigid plating to reinforce it further.
Rune Armour
Rune Armour is a protective wraithbone armour suit psychically moulded to its Eldar recipient. It provides greater protection than other, bulkier forms of armour, in part because its psychic energy can deflect a shot or blast before it hits the armour. Even lascannons and Plasma Weapons can be turned aside by Rune Armour. Rune Armour is worn only by Farseers and Warlocks.
More here. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Eldar_Equipment_(List)

>>96297015They seem fine. Most of their stuff is kinda weak aside from the doomsday arks. TSK is fucking terrifying but I havenโt actually had to play against him often enough to gauge why.
>>96297051All aspect warriors have 5+ invulns, all of their tanks have 4+ invulns. Iโve had full blown crashouts from someoneโs banshees or fire dragons spiking on their 5+ and rolling me up like a cheap carpet.

>>96297282>>96297292>>96297210In terms of lethality, GW is in an interesting catch 22.
By far the most frustrating and anti-fun mechanic in the game is the proliferation of 4++ saves rendering everything a coinflip. A lot of traditional Anti-Tank weapons are kind of shit because low volume of attacks.
This leads to this gigantic mix where if your army has 4++ or 5++ on your vehicles they feel tanky, but if you have no invuln you are made of paper outside of things like the Rogal Dorn.
This leads to hull spam. Tanks are too tanky because the game isn't lethal enough. In terms of attacks, GW gave way too many things in the game [Blast]. A lot of weapons are D6+3 Blast which is often between 5-11 attacks.
The final issue is the damage numbers. Damage 3 is everywhere. There are way too many units that have access to mass damage 3 attacks that end up mulching what are supposed to be elites (i.e. Space Marine Gravis). Marine Terminators also kind of suck and so you end up with the standard marine army trending towards hullspam just because out of the FIVE major armour types, one and a half are viable (Gravis is too fragile for how slow and limited their buffs are, Terminators suck in codex with no damage output, Firstborn is in gay baby jail, and most Phobos units have already been kneecapped or are just support units).
I think a lot of things in the game that are Damage 3 (Especially Damage 3 blast weapons) need to go down from d6+3 Blast or d6+1 Blast to just a flat d6 Blast. This includes Votaan's shit, Doomstalkers, MBH, forgefiends et all.
I'd say in order to properly balance lethality, you need to do a whole mixture of things. Move a lot of 4++ saves to 5++ including on many elites, reducing a lot of D3 down to D2, and lower the number of attacks on a lot of units. This then lets you drop tank Hull Points down a little.
Halve the number of attacks, remove toughness/to wound rolls, no feel no pain, no rerolls, no roll to charge, reduce movement distances, no pick up and redeploy, no strategems or enhancements
best you can do with a 32mm scale full of tanks and monsters that has to be played on a <6x4 board.

>>96297624My final conclusion to the greentext is that people are insisting on playing a grim dark setting of a game, despite hating grim dark stories. Unless you have an actual argument supporting the fags complaining there's grim dark in Warhammer, consider this the last (you).
Not even your nitpicks over this make sense:
Nids are starving. Even without the fact that they've lost biomass, the only thing we know for sure about them is unrelenting hunger. Denying it biomass will only cause it to need to feed more.
>"that intro is for the imperium,">still latching onto that when I said the issue is people don't like the setting being depressing and "grim dark">I don't like the War in Heaven, so you're wrong. You don't get to balkanize canon like that, anon.
>>96297602>In the ultimate guide and some codexes have pointed towards where tyranid organisms are more and more developing their own minds even personalities.>Which could fracture the hivemind and lead to different hiveminds.>they're growing so much that they're suffering the consequences of growing too muchIt's like everyone's starving but you're overfed and now sad because your chair is broken.

>>96297864It made me really happy when we started getting more eldarfrens. I'm hoping we get more sistersfrens over time, cause they seem underrepresented on the fridge
>>96297874>people are insisting on playing a grim dark setting of a game, despite hating grim dark storiesyes, that's imperialfags, not taufags.
taufags see their empire set against unknown horrors far larger and ancient than them, their naivety makes them tragic preys.
imperialfags seethe and moan about the cruelty of the imperium being absolutely necessary and justified, where one of the most grim and dark elements of the imperium is that there are alternatives to the path humanity has taken.
the existence of factions like the votann and the tau don't rob the setting of grimdark, they underline it further by contrast.
if you don't understand this you simply don't understand 40k, and if you don't understand 40k then you simply don't like 40k.

>>96297684no its a shit and boring ass game
>>96297937I think the most posing you are gonna get out of him is heavily dictated by how dynamic you place the feet.
A slight tilt forward and to the side while pointing the weapon level could give you a good firing pose, for instance.
That will involve cutting a few things and reposing, I recommend looking at how knights players do it in large scale first... Which I of course can't find right now for you but it's out there.
>>96297747Fridgeking my beloved
>>96298029A Votann DLC is in the works, though....
I think GW needs to do something to make the Black Legion cooler instead of just being generic chaos space marines. Give them some flavour, something interesting and unique to them. They're the main antagonists supposedly and no one gives a fuck about them, it's silly.
>>96297993Considering the current thread environment I fully understand.

>>96298401Probably because its expensive
>>96298397>IMG_8252_jpg.jpg>Pic relatedJust as planned.
>>96298354You play a extremely speedy glass cannon.
You can absolutely play them but they aren't very forgiving.
If you can cage with boats/incubi/court while using kabalites to sticky objectives you are gonna win just fine.
A couple of sleeper units are the Beast master and his palls, they push up the middle on their own and for not too many points, and provides you a basic anvil in a army that sorely lacks one. They die, but they keep the other guy busy for a turn while you get in position.
Mandrakes are STUPIDLY good due to up/down tricks while plinking damage out.
Your must have are the Scourges for their anti tank power.
Add seasoning with Homunculi units, wrych cults (The hellions are so overlooked it's criminal).
One thing to note, however is IF the refreshIcanfeelitanon ever get his wish, we likely lose a lot of these units in their current form, I will almost put money on the fact we'll lose the beastmaster for instance. I pray for the court. As well as if we get a full reflesh (doubt) we will likely use most of our multipart kits which will become the new Cad made crap when you can't free pose. We would in this case probably also lose the mass weapon loadout on the Scourges so keep that in mind.
In all likelyhood we will just get a character, like the one we have seen, and lose some finecast, that's that.
Hope that helps.
>>96298409So are titans and thunderhawks and non cadian guardsmen armies and I've seen at least a handful of those kicking around irl
How the fuck do I beat Tomb Kings as Necrons?
>>96298416You're right. I concede the point.
>>96298436Introduce them to this guy named The Deceiver, he'll handle the rest.
>>96298354the best way to explain Dark Eldar is as follows
They have a unit that can kill nearly anything in the game without -1 damage in a single activation, but it requires you to jump through several hoops and if you ever fuck up that unit will die instantly.
They have the most annoying anti-tank in the game and it completely destroys gunline armies.
They have the best army rule in the game but if you mismanage it you instantly lose the game
They have some of the best objective control in the game and will literally just annoy you to death on objectives
The basic troop unit has a schizo loadout but it also has access to Sustained Hits 2 + Lethals so randomly the basic infantry squad can blow up a tank
They have a generic character so good that it genuinely seems like a shitpost.
Several of their units are very good but out of print or in terrible boxes with notably one of their best units being in a box so bad that it has under 1.0 points per dollar
Playing Dark eldar is SUFFERING. But if you get good, you make THEM suffer too.
>>96298478Pretty fitting.
>>96298436Nobody plays tomb kings
>that feminine urge to buy more shit even though I've got enough tools and models to build and paint already
>>96298478Man that sounds like a massive fucking headache.
>>96298478Yeah, it's a huge fucking headache to play but it's very unique and extremely rewarding when you get it right. If you do it right then from the other side of the table it seems like you are just blowing everything up and not letting them hit you at all. But most people don't realize you're walking a tightrope about to get fucked at any given second if you misplay and you are only surviving by clever usage of line of sight blocking and transport cycling And perfectly allocating exactly enough damage to kill what you need to kill without making an unfavorable trade.
I will say they are possibly the most annoying Army in the game to transport though and you will constantly be snagging and breaking hooks and chains and blades off of them so bring glue.

Have another poem 40 kilograms:
Whose sprues are these on the windowsill?
This pot of Nuln Oil just spilled,
I swore Iโd stop ... yet here I hover,
Clicking โBuy,โ one more layer of clutter.
Who let this pot of Agrax run dry?
I swore, โNo more shades till pigs fly,โ
yet at 3 a.m. I hit โAdd,โ
because the last one dried up ... too bad!
Whose pile of shame is this? Itโs mine.
Ten Termagants unpainted? Fine!
A Knight half-built, his face still bare,
Yet Iโm stalking brand-new Sororitas flair!
Thereโs a stack of bases I donโt recall,
A drill whose bitโs too small, too tall.
A wet palette crusted shut with grey,
And still I whisper, โJust one more sprayโฆโ
Whose cubbyโs crammed with decals?
Whose shelf bows under extra sprues?
Who needs four pots of Wraithbone white?
Apparently me. Every night.
Thereโs a sprue of Sisters I meant to build,
A box of Orks still shrink-wrapped filled
With dreams of dakka Iโll never run.
But eBay whispered: โRare! Just one!โ
Whose house is this? Itโs mine, I know.
But Games Workshop keeps running the show.
I swear Iโm done. Iโve got enough.
But look! New cultists! In gothic stuff!
So here I sit, beneath the heap,
My wallet thin, my backlog deep.
I whisper to the Emperor above:
โJust one more kit ... I swear! ...itโs love.โ
