Maybe it's stupid question but - would white spirit dissolve acrylic paints? I was wondering if I could use gouache varnish I have instead of water based but it's thinned with white spirit.

Generally speaking, it should not. White spirit does not react with acrylics. However, if you completely flood the model with it and/or you are very (very!) rough with your cleanup, it might get under the acrylic paint and then it's all ogre.
In 99% of cases, you are safe. However, if you are using AP paints, you definitely need to varnish, because a lot of AP paints are some kind of garbage bin tier acrylics that get stripped down by white spirit.

To the anon who told me to us AP quick paint to handle the zenithal undercoat, thanks, it worked out well.
I hope it still looks like the light comes from under the statue.
Also I dropped the mini, and since its 3d printed resin, All Might's antennae hair broke off. Which is actually for the best, since now it looks even more like the Leman Russ/Emperor statue I wanted it to be in the first place.

Two ways. Do you want the stripes to be the focus or to be accent patterns? If you want it to be the focus then decide on what your main viewing angle will be then orient the stripes to look the best from that angle. If not the focus then whatever angle fits best within the space that you are going to paint the hazard stripes in.

Opinions on the cloak? It's based in Naggaroth Night and highlighted in a mixture of Naggaroth Night and Kakophoni Purple. I also threw a bit of Carroburg Crimson shade over it to try and soften the transition lines. It looks very mediocre to me. I kept getting frustrated that my mixed paint kept over thinning while I kept trying to layer it.

Your highlight color needs to be a lot brighter, right now it looks like your midtone is being applied. Depending on whether you want a red leaning or blue leaning purple you could try mixing a light red or light blue to your purple mix to get a highlight color. Won't be as bright as mixing white in and it won't desaturate the purple as much while providing interesting hue.

Tamiya extra thin isn't paint, it's a plastic specific glue. It welds one piece of plastic to another piece plastic permanently, and only does plastic to plastic.
Superglue is for sticking together everything else, or where you might want to separate the parts later.

Superglue requires precise application, is easy to fuck up and leaves residue behind.
Tamiya cement is thin and evaporates, so there's no visible residue left behind on a glue seam.
You can melt details if you apply too much, but the bottle comes with a small brush, so it's hard to fuck up if you aren't a total hamhand.
You can also use the cement for other stuff like deliberately melting details, or throwing dissolving plastic offcuts to thicken it up and make a plastic gap filler.
Just get both, watch a video or two and use them as and when you feel appropriate, you'll need one or the other eventually anyway.

Plastic cement is great, I've only had problems mounting GW's flight stands to bases with it (and the non-thin one at that), and a small pot can do a good many models. Superglue is what you'll definitely use for magnetizing and resin models.

Break the problem down into smaller easier problems. Instead of "how would I use the airbrush on this mini" instead ask "would I use the airbrush for this part/color." Using this mini and its colors as an example, the stapes I'd take would be:
>large needle and nozzle for priming
>when cleaning the primer out of the airbrush switch to a .3 needle/nozzle for detail
>spray the black metal, clean airbrush
>spray the brown for the pants, clean
>spray the green skin, clean
>spray the yellow metal, clean
>touch up overspray by brush
>the shirt, straps, bandages, and cloth can blocked in after

Instead of trying to spray everything and avoid mistakes I'd just get the large areas blocked in quickly then fix overspray after. The cloth shirt and straps on his back and the loincloth in front can just be done by brush later rather than trying to painstakingly angle the airbrush and try to get everything that way. Its a tool like any other, use it to save to time elsewhere.

yeah, in that video he uses it for a bunch of small detailing, I posted it because the subject is Orks. In this plague guard one for example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dREkHQiltg0 it's pretty much just setting lights/shadows + mood. The part that needs more controls is when he does the purple detailing on capes, but you can safely incorporate 80% of the airbrushing concepts just doing zenithal with different colors.

If you're interested in oils or contrast painting, going over his channel is really worth it, most of his videos are his usual speedpainting process, but he does instructional stuff too. - Here's one all about oil painting from top to bottom, for example . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3XRwj5l3Eo&

I'm going to try laying they whole thing over again. I'm not happy with how it came out. I'll try mixing up way more paint than I should need and try to limit how much water mixes in, since it always keeps thinning on my wet palette. I'm tempted to even paint over with the base again and start over, but at that point the paint my start getting too thick and leaving texture.

You sound like you're actually trying to improve so I'm going to give you my honest thoughts because it does not look very good.
My first issue would be the color choice, blue and violet/purple can work together but the shades you picked don't do it for me. That's just an opinion though.
Creases and top of the folds have way, and I mean WAY, too little contrast. Try adding some black to your shadow color and brighten up your highlight with bright pink or blue depending on what result you prefer. I think I'd go with pink myself to add some warmth so that it contrasts with your cold blue.
Your transitions are very abrupt, there are places where it doesn't look blended at all. It looks to me like you were glazing which is pretty hard to do properly on larger surfaces like that. My advice would be to layer instead - slowly add you shadow/highlight color to your midtone and build the transitions that way with thin layers. It's a lot easier to get a solid result this way.

I wasn't trying to glaze. I think my wet palette was too wet and thinned my paint while I was using it. It's a frequent issue I have desu. Mixing a consistent color is hard with GW pots. I think I'll just go over it all again with Nag Night and start again, hoping that the paint doesn't get too thick on the cape. At that point I'll have to strip the cape with will be a pain.
I was iffy on the purple at first and thought it would make the whole thing too colorful, but it grew on me when I got the base color down.

Also sounds like you may have a little bit too much moisture in your brush after washing it, so you're adding a tiny bit of water to your paint mixes each time you go back to the palette until your paint breaks and gets watery. Just to eliminate variables with your paint make sure you're wicking the extra moisture out of your brush onto some paper towels after you wash it.

If your paint is thin enough, you might be able to get away with starting again. If worse comes to worst, I think you could just let it soak for a day or so and gently rub the excess paint off.

I don't really consider myself better than "alright" at this sort of thing, but I think you should have started with a darker colour and worked your way up. I posted this last week, but I did a similar thing with this model. I fucked up my initial coats by making them too bright, so I slopped a warmer brown over everything and started over.

Well, $30. $50 is painter's scale or it's bundled with painter's scale. You can check back on Black Friday for discounted minis (depending how fucked they are from tariffs) if they have any left in stock. Alternatively, check second hand places like Facebook.

idk how you think you've ruined it already, just looks like you've basecoated the skin (but noodled around with layering). Just wash it darker, then go slowly with thin glazes/wet blending each area. As an anon said, oil washes would be great since they would provide the soft skin like transitions easily and you could just focus on the midtone to highlight transitions.
If you're worried about the microscopic damage you've done to the texture of the model with your layers then idk.

>Anybody who has done 2 part mold casting, is there a mold release you recommend while creating the second half of the mold?
I use Smooth-on silicone spray. Dust the mold, then use an acid brush or other sythetic brush to apply a thin even layer. Remember to remove your master model and get the release into the existing mold cavity, and trim off any thin rims standing proud of the cavity's edge as well. If you don't get release inside, it's really easy for a small amount of silicone from the second half to sneak around the side of the master model and leave a big, ugly blob in there.

For casting I use talcum powder, it seems to disrupt the surface tension of both resin and tin to make them flow better, and it doesn't burn. Baby power is no-go for tin, though, it's mostly cornstarch and not talc. Make sure to pop on a dust mask, talc is a cumulative carcinogen and it itches like a bastard if it goes up your nose.

No, they're gelatin impregnated with ink on a paper backer.

Nope. Go ahead. It's pretty common in mecha circles already. You can also get decal paper and print your own.

Thing is, I screw up every soft transition attempt. When I was searching for info, I ran into people using wet palette and thinning to glazing but in my case, when I thin paint to glaze, it rapidly dries on wet palette. Yes, I known it supposed to keep it moistured but no matter what kind of baking paper I use, it's double coated.

Still, before going to stripping I will at least try to fix it a bit then.

Either you're using an incredibly scuffed wet palette, or you live in a place that's dry enough to justify owning a humidifier. Get a real wet palette, get a humidifier, or get both.

As a side note, if you're going to strip it anyway, you may as well see what a wash does to it. Darken it down with a wash and see where reapplying some of the layers leaves you.

take it easy anon. Maybe try painting thinly but not glazed on the model with one brush, and then using a wet brush to dilute the paint up to glaze the surrounding areas whilst still wet. Glazing is very temperamental to me and I try to avoid it since I can never get the same consistency of paint every time.
Or try painting layers with shitty harsh transitions, and then wet blending those transitions softer.
Skin is hard and especially female skin because it's so soft. As another anon said starting darker would be easier if you're doing it without relying on washes since skin is at its basic is 3 colors. Dark -> saturated midtone -> desaturated highlight (and then bright highlights and finishing touches).
So you do the dark -> midtone transition and then to highlight without muddying up the hues with mixing the dark with the desaturated highlight. which would look weird. Dark mixing with the desaturated highlight will look grey, like stubble.

I'm no comp painter but from what comp painted models I've seen you're lacking in contrasting shades and focused highlights. That is to say your shadows should be lower value contrasting colors to make your intended lighted colors pop and the highlights on the focus point(s) of the model should be higher value than anywhere else on the model (the face, in this case).

I would say that some more contrast would be more fun to look at for a mini, maybe it's the lighting but your dark color doesn't look especially dark. And without a wide enough value transition it looks sort of flat. And having it darker would make it easier since getting the volumes sorted would be easier and more visible softer transitons would be obvious
But also looking at it again I think you're overthinking it because the rest of the model is still just black primer, and all your supposed mistakes are standing out in contrast. Honestly it just takes time, simply from the drying time of paint. Nothing's ruined

Okay then, I will see where this will go before deciding if it require starting over or not. I checked on one of test tiles (for testing shades with Vallejo and AK paints) and seems that white spirit shouldn't dissolve cured paints so I can try this trick with oil paint turned into wash, too (let's just hope that artist oil paints will work for that purpose).

Dark brown often works, but all of your questions really depend on the tank and it's colour. You don't highlight/dry brush a T-34 with the same colour as a Tiger, simply said.

Gimp is not good. It can do a fair bit, but every step is a cock and balls torture and the result is not guaranteed to be great anyway.
I didn't work with Affinity that much, but everyone I know is praising it, including people who do some pretty nice things. I would definitely go with it over a Gimp.
Photoshop runs with Wine, btw.
There is also https://www.photopea.com/, which is basically Photoshop in a browser. The only problem is that there are some limitations compared to the real thing (such as very barebones Camera Raw).

I would either go with PS/Wine or Affinity (no clue how it runs on Linux).

Different person but there is always Darktable - open source, on both Windows and Linux but heading towards odd development direction by removing simple and trusted modules in favour of convoluted and advanced ones (including, most hilariously, removal of "contrast/brightness/saturation" sliders in favour of module that explicitly states in manual that user need to understand colour theory to even begin). I personally still sit on 2.x version that works just fine. There is also cheap alternative in form of Corel Paintshop.

This. Stores with opening hours starting 8:30/9:00 are completely out of time. Who is supposed to go there? Neets? Housewifes? Former have no money, later are pretty much a thing of the past.
Here (small ass town in Germany), stores usually close at 20/21:00, but our LGS has 3 "game days" and has open until 23:00, from 16:00, but only opens from 15:30-20:00 on all other days.
(they run an online store too, so they are working full time for sure, but there is just no reason to have someone sit in the store for the occassional kid walking in at 12 after school).

badly for rocks, better to simulate walls or concrete
you would have to crush it quite a bit to get useful small rocks
you could also crush it all the way to sand-like consistency to use as general basing material

i wouldn't recommend it tho, you can hurt yourself with the shards while you are handling it if you are not careful

How do I archive this brown-orange tone of some of the elements in these temple guards with citadel paints?

With Citadel I think these would be something along the lines of mournfang-skrag-deathclaw browns if I remember correctly. Most paint ranges have these warm orange-browns.

I want to get into some historical tabletop games. I bought some Victrix and WA to see if I'd like building an army. This is my first time painting. It's not done, but the paint seems thick and very glossy. It's Mr. Hobby Aqueous.

Is Aqueous OK for hand painting non-mechs? Do I need to thin my paints more? Is it a skill issue, or should I just buy imported Vallejo or Citidel? I live in Japan so I wanted to do it with Mr. Hobby or Tamiya.

I used Contrast paints on two things: the skin and the little warpstones held by the smol rats. For the skin, though, it was more like a basecoat/roadmap, from there, I adjusted and built up the 'real' contrasts.
For the horns, to be fair, I had a lot of space to work with and could really spread the gradient the way I wanted. My advice, looking at your work, would be: donโ€™t be afraid to use darker colors to push the contrast, white pops a hundred times more next to black (ehe).

Wargames Atlantic has done a "not-traitor guard" crowdfunding campaign 2 years ago, and i was hyped enough to back it. After lots of delays (original they promised shipping date would be may24), apparently they will deliver this summer. And since then, i decided to already start my traitor guard army, first the tanks (because the campaign did not include any), then Sentinels, and then the Infantry because i think the Blooded look pretty cool. So i have build like 60 of them, and have around 10 sets of various recasts and prints "in storage" for whenever i get the bulk of plastic infantry, weapon teams, ogryns, cavalry, beastmen and artillery from WGA.

Its not possible to join the campaign, but as i said, they should deliver soon, and after that they will sell them regularly:

They are a regiment with specialization on recon and urban combat, so many light infantry and light vehicles like sentinels, but after fighting in a remote warzone where they got cut off from supplies and had to fight for survival against mostly Xenos (which is why they see themselves as defenders of mankind still) for years. After the corrupt subsector officials refused to supply them with new vehicles and recruits, they more or less went rogue, drafted imperial populations into their ranks and stole equipment (and also killed numbers of pdf), and therefore were declared heretics. They were harrassed and fought imperial forces at some occasions, and it became apparent that drafting all sorts of human dregs into their ranks wasn't such a great idea, because in the common ranks, some warrior cults started to spread. Also the regiments command staff is sometimes rumoured to meet with a huge figure in power armour who serves as a tactical advisor.

(I kinda want to align them with the Alpha Legion, but i'm not 100% sold on how this contact could be established in a good and natural feeling way. But i guess a desperate regimental commander will listen to a Astartes if he offers help, and not seeing the bigger plan this Marine might have in mind).

Nobody knows i guess, its the Alpha Legion after all. I liked the idea of having a regular army slowly getting more and more corrupted by their constant suffering from the corrupt bureaucracy, the brutality of the war itself, by their bad recruits they picked in desperation and in the shadows, its one traitor marine pulling the strings all along, but at the same time helping them with tactical insights normal humans might not have, so they are actually beating back the Orks and Eldar raiders in the sector here and there

Whenever I was doing a 40 tag lockout/tagout and required a whole bunch of duct tape "butterflies" I would put them all over my body to resemble some sort of samurai/raider armor.

I'd like to revisit this kit and try something new. But the model is already varnished. Should I prime another layer and see where it takes me, just paint on the varnish? Or is it best to accept the burden of regret and leave the model as is?

The layers look fairly thin so you could try priming it again I think. Honestly the best way to go about this would be to strip it but I'd imagine stripping a model of this size might be difficult

How would you guys paint this scorpion guy? I wanna do a construct theme so I'm thinking obsidian for the scorpion body but the human torso is throwing me off. Maybe do his face/hands in like a dessicated grey?

I've had some luck using dark brown texture paste, then laying down short snips of jute twine with some ink toning as straw bedding. After this pic I hit it with grey, brown, and a little stippled black to make it look more weathered. Then I trimmed it back to the edges of the base later

For the skin?
>Citadel mournfang brown
>Two Thin Coats dark sun yellow
>Two Thin Coats Yellow flame
Did about a 50/50 mix as I shifted up. The image on the left was the base coat of mournfang with only a single layer of mournfang/dark sun mixed applied over the base.
I may have also used Vallejo's toxic yellow, but I can't recall.

If you want a harmonious scheme then you can use a dark purple shadow for both the obsidian and the skin. If you want contrast you can do a purple shadow for the obsidian and a dark green shadow into grey on the skin. Could make the obsidian just black and just do a tint to the skin, lots of ways to take it. What other colors are you using for the rest of his clothes and metals?

No green at all? Is that shade of skin just made from using the yellow over that brown? It looks like it's got a hint of green in it?

I will buy those paints and give it a go. The colour on the skin looks great.

Well initially I was trying to decide between sandstone and obsidian as most of these guys are supposed to be living statues, but I think sandstone on sand bases would end up looking kinda boring. So I'm thinking obsidian, maybe tinted either purplish or potentially like a greenish blue. Then gold for the metals, dirty ivory/cotton for the wrappings (classic mummy look), and maybe red and blue for some color.

Fairly standard tomb kings scheme. I have a pretty good handle on it save for the scorpion torso throwing me off.

No green. The original scale I sketched out for myself had green in it, but I ended up removing it after my initial fuck up in favour of building up from a brown base.
I think I mentioned it in one of the other threads, but I like my goblin skins ranging anywhere in the browns, yellows, oranges, or greens.

Mine don't come out nearly that good yet, but my advice is to use your single best brush with the sharpest tip, or just one that you seldom use except for extreme detail work. Thin the paint as normal but test it on your nail or skin to make sure it will flow properly and go ONLY exactly where the point of the brush is.
You do have to be fast because, at least in my case, the tip will dry pretty quickly. My last seals probably would have come out a bit better if I had a bit more patience and worked slower, but they came out decent enough
