The entire concept of Knuckles is that he is the Anti-Sonic who is as strong as Sonic is fast. Sonic is like the Flash? Okay, then Knuckles is SUPERMAN, if not ONE PUNCH MAN. Sonic has the Chaos Emeralds to go Super? Knuckles can use the MASTER Emerald to shut down that Super form, if not just flat-out punch it out with sheer brute strength because he is just. That. Strong. Sonic is as free as the wind? Knuckles is the immovable mountain.
The entire concept of Shadow is that he is Dark Sonic. That means he's effectively another Sonic. Chaos Control? Immortality? It doesn't matter what Shadow has. He's another Sonic? So Knuckles can K I L L H I M .
The only reason why this isn't as obvious, is because the image Knuckles has gained in the public eye of the fandom at large is the worst aspects of Donald and Goofy working against himself like the Daffy Duck to Sonic's Bugs Bunny. And in my opinion... Knuckles should never be "Daffy". Because that's obviously Jet.

I've been revising my plans for that a lot, lately. I think I'm actually very unsure of what my overall plans for him should be.
The plans for Volcanix are focused more on rebuilding the initial premise and set-up behind his Knuckles role, by using Kevin 11 in Ben 10 Omniverse during the "Rooters" arc to recontextualize and add to the "Sonic vs Knuckles" rivalry, framing it as "Sonic" being seen as a threat to the world so "Knuckles" is being used as a weapon to take him out. And using Terra from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep to add to and recontextualize the "tricked by Eggman" aspect, because another idea is "Iblis" being sealed inside of him, which then means that most of the plot around him is the villain(s) trying to get Volcanix to "erupt".
But for Volcanix's arc specifically, my ideas usually center around having him be obsessed with "Power", and having to learn "Responsibility", mostly because that's more-so inspired by my real life friend that Volcanix is supposed to represent. But that didn't fit, well, the KNUCKLES role he's meant to have against Energy, so I had to just readjust those ideas as his backstory/origin. Another aspect, I guess, is a sense of wanting to restore honor to his family or whatever, which I guess is just the Movie Knuckles direction but crossed with the weight of what the Knuckles Clan are like in the games where they were a power hungry clan of conquerors but were wiped out as a result of that.
But beyond all that, I feel like I'm actually not 100% sure of what I should do with Volcanix and his arc in the long-run. Beyond the vague sense that I want him to be a Superman figure, a Guardian of the world as a whole. I need to really think this through a lot more. I probably haven't focused on him enough.

Knuckles is simply the Anti-Sonic. Are you saying that there is no room for a character designed to be the opposite of Sonic? Sonic as a series can not handle the direct counterpoint to his character? The one who challenges the very notion of Sonic's worldview?
If the franchise can't handle this type of character, then the problem isn't Knuckles. It's Sonic the Hedgehog himself.
