Theres two reasons they’re doing this.
1. Cutting off the illegal gibs is existential for democrats. It would be extremely hard to reimplement, especially in this fiscal environment. It also puts a permanent damper on any future illegals being interested in coming here, the same way a remittance tax does. It’s also more effective, inexpensive, and PR friendly than having ICE play wack a mole forever.
2. They think their party are cucks enough that they won’t fight back. If it were a (R) getting shot it would only imbolden the GOP’s resolve.

What I would do is wait and see how the democrats respond to this. If they downplay it then I’d secretly reach out to more moderates to get them to defect. Maybe the trump administration could even use them as martyrs to crack down on left wing extremists more.
