A profile that has logged on recently and is weeks or months old with 0% or 1% reply rate isn't a real genuine profile.
Also you have those cases where the reply rate is like 5% and it's someone who made a profile a year ago.

"Abandoned" accounts are deactivated after 30 days. (Although I've seen users return well after 30 days.) The "active accounts" stat you see on the login page only counts active accounts. Otherwise the number would be over 150 thousand and you'd see two-year old accounts in search results. I tried decreasing the active account window to 14 days a couple of months ago iirc, but I think 30 days is the sweet spot, especially when there's other indications of users being recently online in the app

I recently added the constraint that you can only see people in the feed if they're looking for people of your gender.

I added it because some people were complaining they were getting unwanted messages, and other people were complaining they were getting too few messages. There's another rule which makes it less likely for you to appear in the feed if you've already messaged a new person recently. So I think that combination of rules will help more users get the right number of messages from the right people.

There's a few different rules though, and it's possible that you really aren't showing up for anybody. For example, there's an AI model which hides porn. It does an *okay* job, I think, but I still wish it were more accurate. Pic related would get filtered from the feed despite it clearly not being porn. Though only about 3 or 4% of pictures get filtered from the feed, false positive or not, so I think it's probably the gender thing, and you're likely showing up for other users.

Yes, but setting it back to 30 days isn't just a way to cook the books. It legitimately increases user retention. Even though new users leave if they see their search results are full of people who haven't logged in recently, new users also leave if they don't see many users in their search results. So there's a sweet spot for the deactivation period, and 30 days seems to work best out of the things I tried.

lol I geoblocked Nigeria months ago because of all the scammers. (Interestingly, the archetypical woman they preferred to catfish as had a really big arse, but I digress.) Most scammers use VPNs, which I can't block unless I upgrade to a very costly Cloudflare plan. I haven't noticed a lot of Indian IPs, bots or otherwise. So after thinking about, I'm starting to lean towards using a mixture of signals to rank feed results. I've noticed that bots are less likely to join clubs, have a high match percentage with anyone, be verified, and a bunch of other things. All these signals can be combined into a simple ranking algo which at least keeps them hidden in the feed. I'll experiment with it this weekend

Hiding the profile is a bit hit and miss on the site. I have done it since I'm concerned about privacy and that women simply will not reach out. Works well enough for a man. 13/26 women have replied back to me.

However, it does make the site seem less active and also might give a distorted view of what sort of users there are. Not to put my fellow man down too much, but I'm at times shocked at how some men present themselves when looking up the feed.
