With the arrival of another great and much anticipated stage race, we return to the exciting world of /WORLD TOUR WINE/ !!
We begin in the Rhone Valley. Today's third stage crosses the Rhone at the 166km mark, racing directly through the St. Joseph appellation of the northern Rhone wine region. We have actually visited the northern Rhone in Paris-Nice, enjoying a modest bottle of Condrieu. Today's bottle is the other grape of the northern Rhone - Syrah. Here, in a narrow, tiny strip of hillsides along the Rhone running south from Lyon, the Syrah grape reaches its greatest expression on the planet. This area grows wines of such depth, complexity, and sophistication that we may actually make up for the absolute horrors we endured drinking Aussie Shiraz in the Tour Down Under.
Today's wine is from another legend - Jean-Louis Chave. Jean-Louis is a SIXTEENTH-generation winemaker in the northern Rhone. His Hermitage rouge and blanc are widely considered the finest expressions of wine in the northern Rhone. The single glass of 2003 Chave Hermitage blanc that I enjoyed was one of the most singular wine memories of my life. If you want to learn more, watch https://youtube.com/watch?v=ISf3hSIjCQU starting at 27:00 mark.
JL Chave has a nice little negociant business where he buys grapes from other farmers and then does the vinification himself. This group of wines - JL Chave Selection - offers some of the Chave magic for very reasonable prices, surely within the reach of any Bert.
Jean-Louis Chave Selection Offerus Saint-Joseph 2022 ($35).
Initial pop and pour. Pours a deep, dark purple/ruby. The nose is sensational - violets, blackberry, herbs, blood, pepper-crusted brisket. The palate upon initial opening has a violence to its tannic attack that demands respect. I let the glass sit for 30-40 mins. As it opens, beautiful structure declares itself. Blackberry fruit and game, then lifted acidity and tannic grip, then a long, deep finish of smoked meat and olive tapenade.
>>149109109Amazing bottle. I bought two others to cellar and this will definitely benefit from some time. By far the best quality/price ratio of the year so far. I thought about buying a bottle of full blown Chave Saint-Joseph (~$110) but wanted to highlight one of my favorite value wines for the Berts.

Why must Nords suffer in Italy?
>>149103698No? Memco won the first TT which had a similar profile to today. The second TT had a lot more climbing. Also it was the third week of a GT and Pogi had the home advantage since he lives in the area and knows the roads like the back of his hand, the part where he made the biggest time difference was actually the descent.

Just throwing this out there in case someone has good advice
Every year I go for a couple of weeks of cycling holiday in the Alps. I don't really do much structured training, I usually get in good enough shape just randomly doing a mix of rides. My ability to do long days in the saddle is OK, but I'm disappointed with my 1-hr FTP effort.
Most FTP improvement plans I can find on turbotrainer are about 12 weeks, what should/could I do in just 4 weeks by more structured training to maybe bump up my 1-hr climbing effort?

Rugby would be another one, or maybe MotoGP? But pro cycling definitely has a higher rate of death since other organized contact sports are able to get a medical response much much faster.
>>149120319combat sports just factor in that the athletes will get injured every fight, which is why they fight so few times a year. The sport revolves around the fact fighters get badly injured every fight
>>149120336Could be. I dont know shit about rugby.
But if you look at cycling. But for example, if you believe the official story at least, Froomes whole carreer went from being the very best in the world to some low level shitter by an injury sustained training, which is not uncommon in cycling. That level of injury-determining-the sport is pretty unusual if you look at all major sports i think.

>>149120388Season ending? All the time. Last season there were 38 individual ACL tears in the NFL, not MCL, not achilles, just ACL. Out of about 1700 active players that is a high rate. There are about 1400 people who are active at the UCI World, Pro, and Conti teams, so that number is pretty similar between the two sports. Its hard to get data on every single season ending injury, but anecdotally, achilles and MCL tears happen at a very similar rate to ACL tears, plus all of the broken legs, back issues, etc. I'd say the NFL results in more injuries, and season-ending injuries, but cycling has many more dramatic injuries.
There are some NFL teams who finish the season with like 5 of 22 original starters still taking the field. Imagine if Visma had so many injuries that all you got was Jorgenson and Van Baarle finishing the season and everyone else was injured.
Also there is the concussion factor, where even if you play a full NFL career, one day your brain will just be red lentil soup sloshing around in your skull and your quality of life would be garbage.

>>149120506Very rare for an NFL player to die during a game, the last time it happened was 1971. A player named Hamlin nearly died a couple of seasons ago, but survived and is still in the league. Both of those instances were due to individual health complications (heart attack, arrhythmia, etc) and not due to a specific injury in a play. American Football just doesn't have the speed required to really kill someone outright. Most NFL player deaths are from their own personal nonsense off the field.

stage 4 (itt)
Should have bet on Vingegaard before this race. His odds are shite now.
>The worrying thing is that it comes after a spring where he did not seem to be at the 2024 level. Yes, he was superb in Fleche, but the signs of weakness were there in the UAE Tour, Strade, Flanders and Amstel. He hasn't seemed to be the superhuman he used to be – and today Jorgenson beats him in a time trial.
>Considering that Vingegaard historically has more potential for improvement from here until the end of the Tour, it has certainly been a better day for a Dane than for a Slovenian cycling fan.

>>149123284This may actually be true. I was thinking about the Liege performance. Evenpoel basically dragged him back alone. Skjelly did a bit of work, sure whatever. But he dragged him back and looked strong as fuck.
Does that translate to 3 weeks worth of mountains and hills? No. But I think he's far closer this year than last and those early hilly stages in this years tour will just be fucking INSANE because there is so much to gain. Pogacar shown his pure dominance on those longer climbs last year (though it wasn't a ripened Vingegaar), so I think they're going to try and exploit him on the hills, particularly Jumbo. Gaining considerable time with Jorgensen will force UAE to work. I think they'll be raced very hard by Jumbo. UAE looks weak, Pogacar can gain it all back in the mountains but that's a high risk strategy so they will have to work.
This will be the best tour de france of the 21st century.
Pogacar has not improved his TT, he is not aero, the head wind has exposed him.

>>149123573I do yeah what are you after from a camera?
>>149123573I have this for the front, very good quality camera and sound is good too
>dji osmo action 4Cost about 200 quid something like that, my dad got it for me for my birthday after a ride where a cunt driver tried to hit us then chased us down the road threatening to run us over lol. This is a good cam, on 1080p it does about 2.5hr. Get a nice big SD card, you only need to delete every few weeks. The mount is actually brilliant, I'll ask my dad which he bought. It uses clips + magnets which sounds sketchy but it's super secure. We chose this because gopro is overpriced and a few technical specs indicated this was superior. The app is great, really fast to upload and you can edit and export through the app for quick uploads. No issues with it, charges fast too and the battery is consistent.
>AKASO Brave 7This is my rear. Cheaper, batteries are about 2hr but they are easy to change out. Waterproof too iirc and you can get cages to mount it for cheap. It's a reliable and cheap camera with wide view. Looks great, not as sharp but it is cheaper than dji and I found it a good solid rear camera.
>>149123849Something for the front and back that can be used to catch drivers who drive dangerously. (There's basically no policing.) It'd ideally not be too bulky or hideous. I've a K-Edge mount out front that has a GoPro mount underneath, but I'm open to options
>>149123996>>149123573The big thing with camera IMO is that they're visable. So either get a head camera or an action camera but for the rear especially, get a big case for it so it's even bigger and just above/below a flashing daytime light. This brings attention to it. I can say with 100% certainty that drivers are more cautious now I ride with a camera on the rear, they give me more space and are less aggressive. There is a personal risk to overtaking for them. It is the same concept with how speed cameras are bright in the UK to stop you in the first place.
That is why I didn't want an integrated my dad recommended, because I thought if it was obvious they'd respond and I was right.
It will make riding way safer. You'll still have subhuman chav cunts or forruns who are completely unaware but it definitely makes a difference in my opinion. God speed lad I hope you remain safe. It's a fucking warzone out there right now.
Part of the point of camera is a) to prosecute and change drivers mentality and the driving culture in the UK. b) in the case of dangerous driving or an incident, to prosecute and show you're not at fault for various reasons. c) in the case of severe injury or death, accountability to give a sense of closure to you or your loved ones which is fucked up but that's a reason. d) overlooked imo but it is to stop it in the first place, hence why I recommend a boxy action camera.
>>149122796I own multiple, very good for the warm seasons
>>149123997>It'd ideally not be too bulky or hideousAssuming you read my other posts I do not recommend this, safety is more important. I've spoken to other cyclists and convinced them. We need to collectively change culture and if they can see a camera they WILL act differently.
>I've a K-Edge mount out front that has a GoPro mount underneathThese are cool. I have a k-edge mount specifically for the camera. It will be the same mounting mechanism for the DJI so all I can say is have a compare between DJI Osmo and the gopro to see which you prefer. Either or, it's minimal.
Another thing to consider is getting something you can use outside of cycling. So a good action camera can be used everywhere obviously and that is what I considered. My DJI I've taken on holiday and had a blast with on it's own whilst it also helped me feel safer on the roads. This is why I didn't want a specifically integrated cycling one as well as the fact it's more obvious. Get something you'll use elsewhere because the fact nasty horrible subhuman CUNTS are forcing you into buying a lot of gear is terrible. But you'd be surprised how much you'll use a decent camera, so that's why I'd recommend a decent one like the DJI or GoPro.
Saddle mounts like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/HOUSON-aluminum-bicycle-computer-cameras/dp/B0F7X697GS?crid=3QUL3Q7QYN850&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Ksf-k1PviySEgTER8VOvSFF0Ez2VUSS32jbhn_YDWm4xHAjeFTezuqiQaDH8AxwXyZYJZHhuRrJmRsqNNfVv4wjDxe_LfnLzPKrZeiuHWFfm_LHl9t5j05fmIcfiJdrC9EHjPUNfYuPrLkIyin5P9SJ882w9-wSM8EE8kO5XaEozx5Eu-X9t_b60GevW4GSjNTZ3TYTKXHoKeKLASDH4do6H0mvK7bXv3Vwlul_uezs.OztUHqBE6USVXZ-yhu_iQy2HVqnbaGiYSnhll4uwDIk&dib_tag=se&keywords=camera+mount+for+saddle&qid=1749668629&sprefix=camera+mount+for+saddle%2Caps%2C137&sr=8-5 are great. That is what I have.
>>149123996>>149124013Thanks—the DJI in particular looks great. & bulkiness on the rear side in particular is a good idea
Also if you're a bert and do not have cameras on your bike whilst living in an area prone to dangerous driving toward cyclists, get a camera.
>>149124093Have some day time flashing lights front and rear, don't wear black, turn around to look at drivers if you're able to. These things made a difference for me as well as cameras. If you look at people before they pass all of a sudden you're a human, not just a cyclist.
My area is a big issue but I made some changes and it was really effective. God speed, fuck cagies.

>Mâcon has been the destination city for a major cycling race four times earlier this millennium. It was most recently in this race in 2017, when a young Phil Bauhaus made his breakthrough by winning a mass sprint ahead of Arnaud Demare and Bryan Coquard. The race was also over in 2011, when John Degenkolb won a mass sprint ahead of Edvald Boasson Hagen and Juan José Haedo. The Tour came to an end in 2006, when Matteo Tosatto took a breakaway victory ahead of Cristian Moreni and Ronny Scholz, and in 2002 the city hosted the Tour's final time trial, which turned into a show of power from Lance Armstrong, who triumphed supremely ahead of Raimondas Rumsas, who is now noted for the victory, and Laszlo Bodrogi.

>>149136249It's a lot easier to be a good team when you have the british government throwing money at you to bolster chances of gold in the home olympics so you have a distinct technological and scientific advantage over everyone else.
It's much harder when your new main sponsor is run by a guy who is a billionaire, but somehow thinks good financial sense is taking away handicapped parking.

>>149136325>weird heart problemsvaxx status?
I fucked my back up yesterday in the gym. I literally cannot walk the stairs without being in excruciating pain. It is horrific. I think it's just muscular pain because I can twist and bend with no plain if I support myself with my arms. But this is the most violent pain I've felt ever. Screaming in pain. If I lie still there is generally no pain at all so I don't think it's disc. Got really luck here.
>>149136439>excruciating pain>It is horrific>most violent pain I've felt ever>Screaming in pain>Got really luck hereaye hit the fucking jackpot
>>149136416Unvaxxed. Did take the official government test nasal swap though and develloped Bechterew afterwards even though nobody in my family has that so maybe thats how they fucked me. Im still quite atlethic though.
>>149136461He's in the UK so must already be a masochist to survive.
The whole 'package' drama that basically destroyed British cycling was grim. Our mp's calling for inquests and such. Very overblown. The true British mentality of tearing their own down. It was never about doping for them, or anyone. It was to destroy a successful legacy. Gloids are disgusting people.
Hello yes Mr Cort, you can go into the break any day now
>>149136461If it was a disc I'd be in permanent pain apparently and obviously that'd have really fucked me up long term. I think this will be a few weeks of pain and slow rehab. Currently in the bath where I think I'll be for the next week to soothe pain and release pressure.

>>149136523Yeah they suck, whenever I get back into cycling the first couple of weeks I fatigue my intercostal and diaphragm. So I have a lot of trouble breathing properly and take shallow breaths. The core and lower back muscles are hellish I find. They weaken very fast and exercising them is extremely boring.

forgot to check final km lol fuck this shit
>>149137440Yes. It being boring and predictable is what makes it perfect as prep for the Tour.
I really don't remember it not being lame. Don't you remember Jonas slurping for Primoz 3 years ago. At least this year there is real competition for the GC.
The reality is that one-week racing peaks with PN and is always downhill from that.
