So guys I'm back from Belgium. Me and my gf went yesterday to Zolder for the Nascar euro finals. It was pretty cool.

Ticket price was low and you could go everywhere. Not a lot of people. In different places you would see the same people. We moved to different places to watch both races.
The gridwalk was also cool to do.
The only woman driver was sporsored by onlyfans, no joke, and she spun twice in front of us.
All in all would recommend if you're close to Belgium.

Went through a course in Italy that specialises in Motorsport (sorta like the FFSA Academy you have in France, just shorter and it doesn't replace regular high school education), then got an internship in a team and went from there. I was a regular mechanic before that.
It was seriously disappointing as far as what they taught us, but what we were really after was the paid internship that came with the price tag. My first ever race was Silverstone WEC from forever ago, which isn't really a place where you expect to find many interns, and that's where I got hooked up on the endurance drug.
From what I heard, FFSA has a good curriculum and it's an actual school, plus they have their own racing team in F4 and they send interns every year to a lot of teams during the 24h of Le Mans, which is great. I know the UK has a bunch of Motorsport courses too. I'm sure every country with a decent Motorsport following have their own version of what I did.

I wouldn't really know cause both here and in Europe we have ATVs and golf carts to move around, and being dressed in team gear and using very obvious work vehicles gives you access to places that the average spectator wouldn't have. The main difference I think is that in the US you are kinda expected to get in with your car/truck/RV and sorta be on your own, whereas in Europe you are expected to walk everywhere and use the facilities provided to you.
US tracks, with a few exceptions, give a vibe of really just being a loop of tarmac in the middle of nowhere with the bare minimum facilities built around it, but you can kinda go anywhere in a "build your own fun" kinda way, like parking your truck on a hill somewhere, pop out the BBQ, a cooler and some lawn chairs and be the happiest racegoer alive while watching cars go vroom 100 feet from you. I'm sure it's not like this everywhere, my only experience with US Motorsport comes from WEC and IMSA. Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca felt a lot like this, for example.
In most major European venues I've been to, you are a lot more restricted in what you can do as a spectator, but there are a lot more facilities to use (grandstands, toilets, bars, etc) and I think in none of those places you can be anywhere in line of sight of the racetrack with your car or an RV, either you use a grandstand or you are walking.
I'm not really the best person to ask about how it is to watch a race though, cause I've been experiencing it almost exclusively as a worker.
I definitely like the American way better because nowhere in a major event in Europe you get to be this close to the teams and the cars, and I'm sure the spectator experience is a blast.
As a worker though, I wish racetracks had more facilities because goddamn I miss garages so much when I'm here.

it's not a first hand experience but as far as I know it's track dependent, like the most obvious example being the ring ofc.
The tracks where wec/elms are racing are the super nice tier. Those which are 1-2 tier below and frequently only serve national level competition have trackside camping for example and less anal about what you do. Pic rel is Oulton park for the 2026 BTCC round

They are all really fun to go to pretty much regardless of series or even how good the racing is. Of course, the smaller series typically has way better access than things like IndyCar. The trick might be burning the GF out on it.

The second is weekend format. WEC's travel means there is definitely not any dedicated support series and they don't tend to fill the weekends up so the events are really only geared for people showing up for 6 hours on Sunday, which doesn't necessitate weekend camping. That's the difference between WEC Fuji and the Fuji 24H. Well the reasons for that are also that in Europe you can drive 4 countries over, watch a race, and be back by dinner time or whatever meme while everything in North America is so fucking spread out you're going to have a limited audience you can attract for just a few hours of racing so you have to make it a multi-day event worth driving 8 hours for (this is what is killing IndyCar oval racing)

Also, props to Fat John for keeping that thing in one piece and generally giving it its best performances. It really was a competitive, good looking car and it really is a shame its biggest competition was the accountants. Hopefully, another GabN will come along and save it. Maybe JLOC or someone will run it in the Asian le Mans Series.

I need to take more pictures on the back straight. I spent about 15 minutes there trying to follow the cars but its hard. I walked away thinking I did not get anything but I got a few cool shots. You can really feel the speed.

Also, swag haul not including all the hero cards. I forgot to bring my Corvette flag to the signing and AWA was all out of hero cards when I got there, which was especially disappointing because I think they have the coolest livery of any Corvette in decades. They also ran out of Corvette, Porsche and Ford mini flags before we got to them, but oh well, it's all just bacon bits on a huge motor/sp/orts salad.

Panning at those speeds is pretty damn hard, especially if you aren't in full manual mode or at least just MF and shutter priority. Still, the fence might require the apature to be set carefully, too.
A couple of the best places to take pics I have found are Turn 1 as they come out of the pits, just before Turn 2 you can get some good shots of the cars bouncing off the curbing (pic related is from film in 2010, sorry it's trash). Turn 5 at the bottom of the esses is pretty good. There is a manhole along the fence on Spectator Hill that looks back along the esses that is fantastic, especially if you have a long lens. Turn 7 is probably the best place for getting detailed, close up shots. The bridge on the back stretch is pretty good and the middle of the hill on the entry to 10 is also great. >>151347231 The bride on the hill between 10b and 11 is also pretty sick because you can get some amazing shots of the cars coming, but also some tails away shots from the other side.

My default set up is manual shutter and aperture, with auto focus and ISO. I did not think to try manual focus for the straight. I will have to keep this in mind when my autofocus struggles with the closing speeds.

IDK how fast your auto focus is or how good your screen is (to check if the shots are any good) but when using a real camera to shoot cars on track I typically only use manual focus because I have been fucked by auto focus too many times. That pic I posted of the Flying Lizard Porache is a classic example. I set the focus on the curb, but once the car was in frame it refocused on the crowd. I didn't even know until my film came back from processing.

What system are you using? I've only ever shot Cannon eos, but I never came close to needing more. My buddy had a nice-ish Cannon consumer model, but it's auto focus sucked, it's manual focus was very hard to use and the screen was blurry, so I said fuck it and just took phone pics.

There's that talk of it increasing rear tire wear but what you need to remember about that is air restriction mostly kills the ability to rev rather than low end torque so it doesn't necessarily make that much difference in terms of wheelspin. Longer braking zones will help passing a little but it's not a big change there either.

Oh yeah, Interlagos has garages that are directly next to the pits. At Petit and many other IMSA events, they are all in tents and RVs like the rest of us, so there is a separate paddock area that is open all weekend. There is a fence that separates that from an area where they set up the "box" and then the pit wall and pit area. The amount of room behind the pit wall is absolutely tiny with how much the box takes up.
I think the gibs at Petit are so common because it's the end of the season and the second biggest race of the year.

My guess is because they made the switch while there were still active GT1 and GT2 classes. They didn't want to spray the money hose at GT1 any more (MANY such cases) and they didn't want to diminish the big daddy grand touring car by making it a GT2, so they just took the little brother sports car and made it a race car instead. It was probably a little better platform and easier to make a GT2 car out of anyway. It's a shame they made the 499p a race car instead of going the Valkyrie route and making a true Hypercar that had to be dumbed down for competition.

Ferrari never raced the 550 and barely raced the 575 before shifting all their effort to the MC12, the 550 race cars were completely third party. GT3 was specifically designed to accommodate lightly modified F430 Challenge cars, GT2 did have a private 550 show up briefly at the same time as the 360GTs but was geared towards lowered powered cars all the way through becoming GTE, with all the later V12 cars being over the supposed displacement limit. It's really hard to make sense of the shilling for the new owners here because in a given article there's like multiple definitions for "runoff", none of which seem to mean "room to not hit a wall".
