Friday FNM at my shop has a $5 entry fee, but whoever wins the pod gets $10 in store credit for winning, maximum of 2 per pod. Despite this, it’s still a casual environment because who the fuck is going to angle shoot over $20 in marked up singles.

Anyways, someone did. On Friday, we had a player a couple pods over with a fully netdecked almost fully proxied Bracket 4 eldrazi deck. Almost all of the lands, creatures, and spells were proxied. So was the commander (Ulalek). Which isn’t bad on its own, except for the fact that the rest of the table was solidly bracket 3 and he was high bracket 4. Also, he straight up didn’t know how to play the deck; he thought cascade was “less than or equal to” not “less than” and tried to cascade sire of seven into ugin.

All in all, he was simultaneously way more powerful than the rest of the pod but unable to convert that advantage due to having zero threat assessment or game IQ, and being generally stupid. I talked to some of the others in his pod as we were walking out, and they said it felt like a retarded mountain lion poorly mauling a toddler for 4 hours before finally eating it. Then, I wake up to picrel discord announcement this morning. I don’t really know what to say to this. There isn’t really a point to this story. I just fucking hate it when someone tries to go hard and jam out that they ruin FNM like this.

I don't proxy cards except to playtest or if I fuck up orders. I don't see much point to it unless the cards are way fucking expensive, which then generally means I probably don't need that kind of gas at a commander table.

If I end up needing more juice for the deck, then I just buy the card when it shows up at my LGS or online.

This cards all display my biggest problem with MTG. If I was a new player I'd be asking "what is dash/mutate/lifelink?" The best of my knowledge the only way to find out is ask another player or Google it. I have only ever seen 1 rule book and I have no idea where it came from.
The other thing is creature type. Monkey Pirate, the fuck is that? He is probably the only one and ever will be. Octopus is surely at least fairly common, and I'd expect human noble to be. It makes it hard to build support for things. I'll never have a card that says "all monkey Pirate you control get. +1/+1 until end of turn" because there are no other monkey Pirate.

"monkey pirate" isn't one singular creature type, he's a monkey that benefits from monkey synergy (really just Kibo I think) and mostly synergizes with pirates as he does two things most pirates do, make treasure and "steal" cards. MTG almost never checks to see if something's two creature types to do synergies, this isn't YGO.

Frankly the art is a bigger draw than the game now.

Lifelink is a type of effect called an 'evergreen' ability; in that it is so commonly printed you will rarely have a game or a pile of cards that don't have at least one card that has it. It's ubiquitous enough you're expected to be learning it when you're learning how the cards work at their most basic level; similar to things like Haste, First Strike or Deathtouch.

Yeah I did, went 3-2 in a 3-man pod on Thursday. When it doesn't get stuck, it's fun and has a lot of triggers. Matoya and Unshakable Tail are all-stars in it. So far the only wincon that's gone off was Golbez himself grabbing Apocalypse Demon, Master of Etherium, or Broodstar. Worldwalker Helm and Stridehangar both make even singular tokens dig deeper, and one game I got out Enhanced Surveillance and really blew through my deck for a win.

For enchantments, Chains and Rhystic were gifts and Biotransferrence I got from my Necron precon
Instants and Sorceries, I paid for Torment of Hailfire, Mana Drain, and the cheap ones. I unpacked the Fierce Guardianship, and the FoW, Entomb, and Vamp tutor were gifts.
In Artifacts, I bought the Mox Opal, unpacked half a dozen Mox Ambers when I was opening BW, the Chrome, KCI, and Sol Ring were gifts, I think I got the rest normally like TOR from a bundle when the bundle was cheaper than the card itself.

I've mostly been playing with precons since I started with Commander, and have a collection of a few at this point. I lost my usual pod, who basically just played precon league with my decks and am gonna start going to my LGS.
To that end, I'm starting to think about branching out into upgrading one or two, but would like to hear any opinions or thoughts you guys have.
I own at the moment: Kalemne, Mimeoplasm, Atraxa, Daretti, Hazel of the Rotbloom, Mothman, Teval, and Y'shtola.
Was wondering which you guys think would be the best to start with. I'm thinking I have a lot of Sultai/Golgari, so maybe tearing some of those apart to boost Mothman or Teval would be worth it?

There are multiple words for it, I was taught it being called an intervening "If" clause. It's a triggered ability, but it only has the chance to trigger at the beginning of the end step IF you've met that condition. So if the first trigger is how you'd meet the condition, then no it won't trigger. If it triggers regardless and you just order them in the right way, it'll count.

I think the main problem is that paypigs are mad at how proxychads are able to access the entire library of the game and build every deck they want on the fly, while paypigs have to carefully consider their bank account, plan their orders, wait for shit to arrive etc. By the time a paypig has completed their deck, a proxychad has already played his first 10 games. And if a paypig doesn't like the deck they built, they are stuck with their purchases, while the proxychad just builds the next deck, completely free of mind.

my favourite proxy deck is a 150€ rakdos tokens deck, of which over 100€ is just the land base. same for my seamonsters deck. I think my most expensive one so far is betor at 330€, but I'm still experimenting with that one, and it runs some overpriced stuff like archangel of thune and hatred (which I even own because a friend gifted it to me in my birthday).

I think you misunderstand how the licensing works. It's very unlikely that Wizards has to pay a flat fee to the licensor and then try to recoup that loss. What's the licensor getting out of that really? If they license for 500k and the set makes a billion dollars, they won't see a penny of it.

More likely they enter a contract where they get a percentage of sales, with a guaranteed minimum pay-out.

So Wizards likely hasn't been charged double or whatever, Squenix has probably seen the success of other sets and demanded a higher minimum.
Additionally, they can have clauses in contracts that are very vague. Like "take all reasonable steps to maximize profit". In which case doubling the price of the set would be pretty reasonable, as it's clear pay-piggies will pay that much.

Plus, the Japs are notoriously fucking greedy. Inventors of the gacha game, Nintendo never reduces it's prices even after 10+ years. So it may even be possible that Squenix does see their IP as more valuable than Fallout and Lord of the Rings.

Honestly Bracket 1 has the same purpose as Bracket 5: They're tiers that provide vocabulary to players regarding "bad" piles and cEDH.

You can make Bracket 1 intentionally, but honestly most ideas that exist there can be elevated to 2 with a little bit of effort; but it does provide a non-insulting way to talk about and engage with a deck that is not meeting precon levels. That said, there's nothing stopping you from having fun with a Bracket 1 table, it's just primarily more helpful as a concept rather than as a tier. Similarly, there are no real differences between Bracket 4 and Bracket 5 other than the intentions and degree of optimization by players. cEDH (beyond being a meme) is trying to win at all costs as fast as possible-- it's not to say a Bracket 4 deck isn't trying to win, it's just that its goal is not to ultra consistently close out games as early as possible; there is breathing room and the ability to play the game instead of comboing off after three mulligans or scooping.

There's a guy in my group who is violently opposed to cEDH, but all of his decks are Simic, Dimir or Sultai and will run every goodstuff card (all efficient tutors, Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study, 20+ counterspells and interaction, Gaea's Cradle, etc) in his colors. The only real different between his decks and a cEDH list is that he just removes any combo like Thassa's Oracle or whatever to replace it with a different two card combo. My protection is mostly blue, which includes counterspells that can also hit combos. I enjoy decks that put the opponents on a fast clock and challenge them to find a way to kill me first. In this way the deck is pretty satisfying because it's about me having to hold a bunch of answers and figure out which is the best to use at a particular moment between hexproof, counters, bounce, etc. Thinking about it the deck plays a lot like a 60 card control deck does in the late game, which you establish your threat and keep the game locked down so the opponent(s) can't kill it or stick their own threat.

It’s $5 entry per week with self-selected categories of Causal/Advanced/Cedh everyone gets a little vote card and you pick a person per pod for play of the game and one for sportsmanship. For the 5th week those are all tallied up and they give a pack to everyone who attended all the weeks and prizes to the top 3 of the respective POTG and Sportsmanship, prizes go from things like nice deck boxes and assorted accessories and the winner gets a bundle. I've never been sure really how Food Chain commanders work.
I know you can get infinite mana from Terra if you can find one of the ways to get more counters on her saga side when it enters or to give it read ahead plus a haste enabler. Or any enchantment to copy the back without the copy being legendary so that it can copy the copy and keep getting the mana. Though you do have to have the mana to transform it on hand in any case.

E.g. for FF pre-release I snagged a second Cloud, Midgar mercenary for $27 dollarydoos (in addition to my pre-release promo one), but they were selling the full-art foil Vivi someone sold them the previous day for near $500 and a full-art Sephiroth Fabled SOLDIER for $250 (the one with the VII behind him). Went there a few days later and both were gone along with most of their other display FF singles. They also broke street date early and had sold out of all non-pre-release product (pre-release kits + 2 participation FF boosters) within a few days.
