PURPLE FUCKING BIRD IS WHAT I LIKE.
Memes aside, It's the freest of the main Successor Houses, it never gets bullshit plot armor like the Davions or Cappies or Wolves, and it's hilariously ineffective government combined with the near constant balkanization makes it possible to pull the "No True Scottsman" fallacy in a way that makes sense canonically without even breaking character. Of COURSE I hate those dirty Anduriens, I'm from Kalidasa, but you know what I hate more than Andurians? CAPPIES. And you know who is even worse than a Cappie? The Lyrans. And if there's one thing I can't stand and I hate it more than a Lyran, it's a goddamn Clanner from those high and mighty Wolves.

follow up: >>96101102 Also what this anon said. The Mariks get a ton of cool mechs that aren't WAAC min/maxxed bullshit. Things like the Hercules, Sirocco, Albatross, Orions, Trebuchets, Hermes, Osts, and stuff aren't anyone's go-to answer for what the best mech is, but they're still decent enough and when played well are rewarding. And every now and then you have the gems where the Mariks get some of the best variants for a lot of ubiquitous models. Like the Griffin 3M, the Wolverine 6M, or the Archer 4M. You have plenty where even if the Marik variants aren't the best, they're still really solid like the Marik Warhammers, Awesomes, Thunderbolts, and some of the Marauders. And then you also have hilarious and goofy garbage that are clearly procurement boondoggles like the Hunchback 5M with it's crazy oversinking and 1 ton of AC 20 ammo, and sticking light gauss rifles all over the place.
It's just a FUN faction with a lot of flavor without ever feeling like Mary Sue bullshit. Time was Purple Bird was the standard of /btg/, but all too many of you have forgotten the face of your father.

Primitive dropships are called dropshuttles and do not have KF-booms, so they can't jump with modern jumpships. Instead they're meant to go fully inside dedicated dropshuttle bays in primitive jumpships.

I'm talking about the XTRO Czar and Drost. They're too big to be be drop shuttles, and they are marked as having primitive armor and experimental autocannons in the case of the drost, but everything else seems to be the same weight as normal rules level drop ships, unlike primitive mechs.

I’d like to start fielding protos next since I’ve already got mechs and battle armor mostly down. I paint/play Snow Ravens and they’re one of the few clans that seem to embrace protomechs, so I figure I ought to add one or two to my painting schedule and go test them out. The Roc seems like a solid pick to start with.

The issues with bugs have nothing to do with their speed, though. The issues all ultimately boil down to available tonnage.
Anonymous No.96104898 [Report] >>96105047
>>96104369
For wasps and stingers at least, the speed IS a serious consideration. Being stuck at 6/9/6 is a hard problem when along comes the Pixie that also goes 6/9/6 and has like 4x your firepower and twice the armor. At least a locust can outrun that Phoenix Hawk, even if it can't outfight it, but for a Wasp or Stinger, fighting a Phoenix Hawk is just shy of outright suicide.
Anonymous No.96104921 [Report]
>>96103670
To me they're even more obscure since they're only used by a very limited number of clan factions in limited capacities. LAMs hit the IS General and Mercenary lists for one of the most played eras and are only artificially wiped out for the second most played era.

How much tonnage you have is of secondary importance to how that tonnage is used. Having 3 tons tied up in jump jets is a significant investment when a single ton can bump up your engine rating. That's why the Locust is the best 20 tonner.

The guy saying a wash would help is right. The biggest problem there is that the bright colors are also in the recessed parts. A dark wash aimed specifically at getting into the panel lines followed by another layer of the base color over the high points to get rid of "coffee stains" the wash might leave where it's not wanted would immediately improve it.

white is a bit of a bitch to paint. I would use a blue gray base and work up to almost white. Never apply pure white, as that needs to be reserved for the highest highlights (and even then, shouldn't really be used at all imo). never try to get full coverage with one or two coats, you wanna build stuff up with multiple thinner layers.

90% of 'garden' worlds are a nightmare like that. You either get ice/desert hellhole or Geigerian wet dream. People spend centuries killing off the native prairie squids and giant crabs just to replace them with immunohardened Terran fauna. Even the clanners did that shit and they LIKED the local murderfauna.

Fun fact, though. Terran fauna has become so ubiquitous through terraforming that by the DA you have people from bumfuck Andurien space going "Wow, they have Pinion Pines in this Terran park! How thoughtful of them to pay tribute to the trees from our homeworld."

That's probably better; though if you need them you could just set up squads with Club (Club/Improvised).

This low to the ground it's basically going to be a question of how many rioters there have to be in a group to be able to deal damage. For clubs, blades and similar archaic improvised weapons, groups smaller than 25 will struggle to deal damage at all. I'd give them micro-inferno grenades to represent moltovs or other improvised incendiaries if you want them to be less of a nothing-burger. But they'll still need to be in groups of about 14 to deal any damage.

I haven't looked at IEO yet, so I don't know if they have much better rules.

I dunno if mine is good looking, but good urban camo comes from color selection and "resolution" if that makes sense. Decide what kind of shapes you want to use to sell the idea of breaking up the look.

Mine are based on a cold-weather climate, so the prevailing white of snow makes a lot of sense. Compared to real camo the volumes will appear large, but that will just make them look better at table height (and be easier to paint frankly).

So I did a white zenithal to start and then I just started blocking in splotches, cleaning them up as I went. Obviously go light to dark, but after that I hit it with some blue-black tone and had to clean it up again with some more white. My latest adjustment was going back in with some ink to panel line in the light areas to make them pop.

For a more regimented or consistent pattern you might want to plan ahead, but generally I just had them together in batches and made sure that any duplicates (like my two locusts and my pile of urbanmechs) didn't have the same colors in the same spot

I took this side-by-side shot with the first snow raven mech I painted, and then one of my latest ravens. It’s neat to have little progress markers to look back on to gauge my improvement. Usually if I’m doing a paint scheme a I’ve done before I’ll try and stick to an established formula so everything in the unit looks like it matches. For new schemes, I usually like to incorporate a new technique I picked up from painting videos or guides (stuff like dry brushing, edge highlights, glazing), but I limit it to one or two new things at a time so I’m more likely to get a successful mini out of it. I used the Camospecs tutorial for grey death legion to do that Ebon Jaguar (I was actually going for an Arctic camo but got the base color way too dark before the contrast layer) and some of their other videos are pretty useful too. Other than that, it’s just volume, and learning how to slow the fuck down. 100+ minis in a little over a year means I can put something on the table for most scenarios, so I’m not rushing to get through a giant grey pile of shame or fill out a basic list, so I feel like I can take my time on each mini and really get them right.

Stormcrow Prime.
Timberwolf Prime (or either twin PPC config)
Mad Dog Prime.
Shadowcat, Prime or B.
Adder Prime.

Warhawk C for cheese.
Wait, there's a pattern. The prime config of most are pretty good.

The Stormcrow Prime is arguably the single best Mech in the game. 20 damage at fuck you range, 44 damage at what the IS still considers long range, heat neutral, fast enough to outrun anything it can't kill, decent armor.

Clan assaults are less amazing because they start to feel the pinch from crits, and they don't benefit as much from as lighter Mechs, what a Clan medium can match any IS heavy and a Clan heavy and IS assault.

The 35 ton Adder does as much damage as an IS twin Gauss boat, which is crazy. It compares all to the Awesome. Sure, it has way less armor, but still.

They’re solid for the most part, but you gotta be able to squeeze the most out of those machines to use them well. Individual clan units tend to be very expensive and mount a very high ratio of guns to armor, so screwing up with one usually means you’ll lose a huge chunk of BV that you might not easily recover, even with superior firepower. The second line mechs are very good because they don’t opt for all of the weight-saving tech like XL engines all of the time, so they end up being more durable and less expensive while still getting the advantages of clan tech weapons.

The omnis that are usually just good across the board tend to be stuff like the Timber Wolf, Stormcrow, Gargoyle, Nova Cat, or the Kingfisher, just because their base layouts aren’t doing anything super retarded. The configs are usually pretty good too, very few duds in this lot.

Novas, Vipers, Warhawks, Summoners, Ebon Jags, Adders, and Grendels can do some decent work with the right configs. The Nova has a couple of really solid picks in there, I would avoid the Prime though. Same thing with the Adder, it’s a crazy sniper but it’s very hot, and very expensive thanks to that tarcomp. Jags are usually good, but I’d avoid the B - it can’t fire half the guns without overheating, and it has no decent bracket-fire setup like the A. Grendels that aren’t doing the “fast jumping sniper” thing tend to be good strikers or skirmishes.

Stay the fuck away from Hellbringers, Kit Foxes, Cougars, Huntsmans, and Pouncers; the speed/armor/firepower triangle leans heavily into the firepower corner so these machines are often far slower and more frail than something of similar tonnage, so they all end up very expensive and are very hard to get your BV’s worth out of.

Cost in C-Bills isn't really an indicator of anything at all. Charger costs more per unit than an Awesome. If you really think money spent on arms development programs is indicator of anything other than ability of your military industrial complex to suck the government dry you only need to look at F-22. Or F-35. Or Comanche.
Meanwhile tonnage is extremely relevant in universe with limited means of interstellar transportation (cuz dropships don't grow on trees and jumpships even less so) and it's one of the main advantages of clantech. BV was made specifically because of that becoming a problem after Clans were released.

4/6 is perfect for anything 75-85 tons. Above that and you're spending too much engine tonnage. Other engine types of course have their own sweet spots, but with standard fusion, you want to sit on the plateau if you're going 4/6.
Anonymous No.96113683 [Report]

70 and 90 tons mechs on the standard engine chart only lose out on 1.5 tons of space each, they’re close enough to optimal that the missing pod space isn’t a make or break sort of thing. On the XL chart, 4/6 is optimal for 95 tons and only loses .5 tons of pod space at 90 and 1.25 tons at 100. Lots of range in those numbers to make viable fast assaults, and pod space doesn’t mean much if you’re never in position to capitalize on it.

Actually, somewhat relevant in that I'm putting together a clan list and I have roughly 1200BV to spend. I figure a really speedy little fucker, preferably with an SRM to crit hunt, better yet with some small or medium pulse would be great, but I'm stuck between the cheapo Fire Falcon and Mist Lynx as options. Anyone prefer one or the other? Got favourite configs? The jumping on the Mist Lynx sounds cool, but it triggers my autism its only got jump 6 and so can't unlock the better dodging of Jump 7.

What do you count as a "full AU?"

Yes, they did do a write-up of a full Alternate setting for it.

The problem is the writeup is incredibly lazy and unimaginative and basically leaves the setting mostly the same, hitting the same beats, just with some monsters thrown in.

Ice Ferret G comes in at under 1200 and has a pair of SRM 4s, a pair of ER Small Pulse Lasers, and 4 AP Gauss rifles. Short ranged, but much better armor than either the Arctic Cheetah or the Fire Falcon, and it should still do the crit-hunting job well. As long as you can live without the jump jets, that’s what I would take.

The flexibility and the threat is both very useful. You could throw a Ferret in the air to point and soiface shouting "IT'S A FUCKING ATLAS III" when it sees a Banshee on a ridge-line, but a modestly armed lance on patrol can both get it and its lancemates to fuck off if you catch them in the open, or link up with other elements to take them down. Just having units in the field can also deter these kinds of incursions too; since intelligence goes both ways.
Anonymous No.96115821 [Report]

Reconnaissance-in-force is not just regular recon but with guns. A recon in force unit looks exactly the same as an attack unit, because their objective is to find out the hard way if an attack on this front would work. They're not there to see what the enemy has, they're there to see if the enemy can stop them. They want to be caught to force the enemy to react. If the enemy can't, then it turns into a regular attack and they break through. If the enemy can, then they either pull back or attack anyway depending on how bad it looks. They're not there to find the enemy, they know where the enemy is and are there to poke them violently. They just have the discretion to pull back whenever since they're not supporting a bigger push at that exact moment.

>Interesting. Do you think Clan Omnis still hold up if its Clan on Clan violence?

Absolutely. Especially against the LPL+TC boats you're being recommended, decent mobility and longer range (ERLL, ERPPC, LRM) will win out.

The Summoner...there's some decent configs, not least of which is the Primary. But spending that weight on JumpJets hurts. It's really only a niche operator for when you need JJs.
Anonymous No.96116112 [Report] >>96116154 >>96116163

Anonymous No.96116154 [Report]
>>96116112
In rules there's nothing stopping them from swapping pods, but it's not really probably their choice unless they're in command. The configurations are already mission specific, so their star/galaxy commander is probably the one deciding what they're running and they're going to be picking the existing configuration that suits the mission brief or trial.

They'll probably get handed pods that suit their aptitudes and role, but mix and match is probably very unusual unless you're a big dick bloodname in the keshik.
Anonymous No.96116163 [Report]
>>96116112
Depends on how big a dick you got in the pecking order. Most use standards unless they're like a Star Captain or higher. It's not a bad thing, because otherwise you'd have newly-christened mechwarriors be the poor fucks picking through the omnipod leftovers after everyone else gets their customs together.

There's also the way omnis are supposed to be used vs. how super major characters use them. Omnis are supposed to swap out according the battle type. Have a Black Hawk and you're vehicle hunting solahma scum? Take a D. Having a duel against a single asshole for a rank up? Take an H. Want to put the fear of god into the elemental points holding the city? Take the L.

Major characters tend to optimize their machine to their fighting style instead, which winds up just being the same as a custom and pointless as an omni.

DESU, anything is better than a simple brawl. I grew up playing that horrible Jungle Strike ripoff Mechwarrior game and I always like to come up with weird scenarios and see which ones and side my buddies want to play.

My favorite was one where the attacker was allowed to field a bunch of vees on the edge of the board and the defenders had to defend a hardened building from the onslaught until they got drop ship extraction after a number of turns.

Capture objectives are a lot of fun provided there's more objectives going on for the opposing side. Otherwise they kind of just devolve into brawls.

I had an idea for a scenario.
>The players are each allotted two Battlemechs, five infantry, and three tanks. Mechs could be up to 55 tons, and the vehicles cannot be more than 55 as well.
>They were deployed in the center of the map, inside a small town.
>Their goal is to defend it for eleven rounds, with the first round being used to position themselves.
>Infantry are allowed within trenches that will provide a +1 to targeting from enemy attackers.
>The enemy forces would be a mix of Galleons, Hawkmoths, at least two Sparrowhawks for support every two rounds, and Battlemechs up to 45 tons.
>The amount depends on how many players are present. If four players, then two mechs whose combined weight makes up the total of each player's mechs will be deployed(If a player's heaviest mech is say, 55, then one lance of a 20 and 35 will be deployed to target that player's section of the city).
>Only the players will have infantry.
>If you can hold out for ten rounds, a pair of Dropships will land just outside the city, and the players will have to make their ways to it.
>At the same time, two Zeuses will emerge from the south and north and close in on the city. You don't have to kill them, just make your way to the dropship.
Its a little out there, but I wanted something interesting to spark things up.

If it lands on heads, a heavy mech between 60 and 70 tons will land on the board and provide long range support.
If it lands on tails, a bombing run will commence from the Sparrowhawks with actual bombs, sweeping across a certain area.
If the mechs are selected, then I flip the coin again. Heads, and it stays Spheroid, Tails, and it becomes a Clanner 60 tonner. A Predator Prime the first time and, if its destroyed and another Clan mech is randomly selected, a Shadow Cat II.

Also, let’s downplay the mechs. And the real antagonist will be Adam Steiner because of his entrenched chauvinistic worldviews.
