For bonus quality, hold the phone between both hands while bracing elbows against a surface like your table and give it a bit more distance away from the camera; keep in mind that modern phone cameras are quite strong and you don't need to be as close to the model as you think. What you see on the phone is a fraction of what's visible on desktop when we zoom in to full resolution.

General photo pic, you don't want to take the pic with the camera too close because your shortening your depth of field and making it harder to capture stuff in focus. It looks nice when you have control and do it on purpose, or do stacking, but not when stuff ends up out of focus.

>>96269547You can if you really want to but it's kind of overkill. The biggest tips to getting good photos of your minis are compiled in a handy how-to .jpg floating around somewhere on how to get the most out of your phone, sort of like the attached but better information. The cliffnotes are as follows;
Stabilise what you're taking photos with, IE brace arms against a stable surface. Use adequate neutral lighting. If you're extra inclined make a photo box; these are easily made by gluing white paper to the inside of a cardboard box for the ghetto-est option. If you're using your default camera app, consider swapping to something like OpenCamera for android phones as the default apps often do weird shit with compression and AI processing which destroys fine detail on photos.
>>96269813Thing is when I check the Gaahleri webstore for the Canadian side, I see everything is sold out: https://www.gaahleri.com/en-ca/collections/all-products
But then USA version is just fine: https://www.gaahleri.com/collections/all-products
I emailed and got a response that website is under maintenance and a new warehouse is opening in Vancouver. So I'm not sure if there is a glitch in the system or if the webstore is keeping track of stock from a warehouse that doesn't exist.

for seo purposes it's bad to take the website out and/or remove the products from the site (and not only seo, it allows you to browse even if you can't buy right now), so they keep them and remove stock, they should put a notice banner or something tho
in other sites like amazon or aliexpress some vendors put stupid prices like 9999€ while restocking for the same purpose

Does the compressor you use for airbrushing matter a lot? This is the first time I've actually done a glow effect but I need some critique on the model. What can I do to improve?
>>96271300Cute rat.
I think the shading on the cloak isn't as good as the shading on the banner, but I appreciate the attempts to actually paint on the highlights and not just slap a wash or contrast paint on it. But the cloak I think is probably just too bright overall, for non-shiny fabrics you should think about it more like the color you're aiming for (red) As the highlight, and having darker shading in the depths
>>96271023 does this really well.
to sell the glow effect better put a really thinned down pastel white+green pastel wash into the recessed areas, and maybe like the eyes of the skull, it'll help a bit. They're tiny so idk if you could draw a white center line in them too, but the point is you want them brightest at the center and to fade out from there
>>96271300To really sell the effect you need to make the source of it much brighter than the glow itself. So in this case you'd need to paint a brighter green, something leaning into yellow or even white, into the recesses. Ideally you want the glow to fade a little bit as it goes away from the source but those outlines you have there will work too.
>>96271300I'd recommend putting a highlight on the eyes, they look very flat and lifeless with just a plain coat of red. Could also try giving them a bit of gloss varnish to really make them pop but I'm not sure if that would end up looking a bit goofy.
I'd like to ask WIP's opinion on something, I've converted this Wave Serpent's turret to be more like the old Forge World one but I can't decide whether to put the extra armour plate on the gun or leave it bare as per the FW kits.

>>96271538yeah that's usually how it works, very little paint dries very fast, that's way brushes smaller than a 0 are a meme for acrylics

>>96271538Used to happen frequently for me all the time when I was using 1s or 0s. But good quality larger size brush (2, 3, even 4) should maintain sharp tip anyway when not being overloaded so you can use them instead as their bigger belly size means they won't dry too quickly. You can also try to grab those "fat" ones (pic related, it's still protected from transport but in real use should still maintain sharp tip despite being marked as size 6) but you should be fine with normal 2.

Then I tried stippling that in for a little extra randomness but I'm not sure it worked out.
>>96272200Angle the head down. Marines look better that way because it accentuates the "frown" of the eye lenses.

>>96274824I think the effect looks great for jade. It is a skosh too blue, at least in the lighting in the pic, to read as jade, though.
>>96275140>It is a skosh too blue, at least in the lighting in the pic, to read as jade, though.Actually, maybe that's just a color balance issue on my 2nd monitor that I've never noticed, before. Yeah I think it reads well.
>>96273278Yeah a little bit, some of it's just speckling from the white that goes away after I paint over it, like on the shirt, but the original primer layer did go down a little grainy, but not like citadel white grainy, I can live with it.
One day I need to figure out why I can't spray white smoothly though my airbrush though.
>>96275140Jade apparently comes in a variety of colors, so I opted to throw a tiny amount of blue in to get it more teal-ish in the brighter spots. I do wish the stippling had come out a little cleaner, but it's fine.

So, anons, I think I'm in trouble. About 2 years ago I bought a bunch of Citadel/Vallejo paints, some shield transfers from LBMS, and many tufts from different manufacturers, but didn't end up using them. They've been in storage in a closet ever since, and I can't get to them until next month. My question is... am I fucked? Will the transfers degrade in some way? Are the tufts (or the glue in the tufts, more like it) fucked? Regarding the paints, some of them were used, but properly closed and sealed.

I thought it might be just the one mini at first, but every god damn mini in this Blitz Bowl game is just retarded patchwork, overly busy, bullshit that I probably wouldn't have noticed if I have not been painting for a couple of years.
Decided to look at the other game minis and they are all retarded. Highly detailed, horribly designed, bullshit. Jesus Christ, why is this company the poster child for miniatures?
>>96278986what exact minis did you get
>>96278986GW deserves the credit it gets for popularizing the hobby to a large degree. But yes. GW designs models to be painted with washes drybrushing or now contrast paints. That's why you get the 3d details where it doesn't even make sense. The older models were more painter-friendly because digital sculpting was less mature. Back in the day you had GW physically sculpting, and if you couldn't reach parts of a mini to paint it also wouldn't have been sculpted. The initial switch to more digital workflows initially just took that sculpting philosophy and applied it to better CAD options but it was similar. Now it's more mature and you're getting REALLY complex models with many layers of stacked details that would have just been infeasible in the past, and still is for many smaller shops.
>>96278991I got Blitz Bowl. Has six Reikland Raiders and six Orkz.
They aren't impossible to paint or anything, it's just horribly designed. I've definitely seen worse but have also seen much better. Fucking Reaper minis, HeroQuest minis, even Descent minis aren't this terribly designed. They look nice, I will give them credit for that, but looking at it from a painting perspective they are a total shit show and that seems to be what they are going for.
>>96279010That makes sense. It definitely seems like they put zero thought into what painting the mini would entail.
>>96278986Maybe GW minis are just not for you. A lot of people, myself included, enjoy painting these detailed sculpts.

>>96276680yes I primed it with grey
>>96276757The model was painted primarily through stippling. Im having issues getting the colors I want to not look bad if the layers are clean and smooth, leading me to need the depth of multiple layers to establish the mid tones. But im trying to get faster at it and I think its just ending up making it sloppier. Thats about 4 hours probly, with 5-7 layers of stippling and sponging and then some drybrush blending, and the recess wash.
I had planned to lean into the istvan themed bases but maybe ill spin it more sandy to bring some warmth into it.

>>96279288> if you prefer to paint bland minis that look like they were sculpted in the 90sI wouldn't be so harsh on those minis personally. There is a certain charm to cleaner, more simple sculpts too.
And there is absolutely overdetailed (digital) sculpts with slapped on textures for the sake of it.
You just have to find the ones you personally like and enjoy to paint and ignore what you consider shit.
>>96279242NTA, but look at it from a completely self-centered view. With more and more people getting into a hobby, economies of scale means prices for some things do come down or, alternatively, people seeing a gap in the market made by a company's insistence to be as greedy as humanly possible creates competition. Take the whole Adobe and Figma business. Adobe, until recently, had an absolute monopoly, but then for the past decade have been the most money-obsessed lazy shitheels in the industry. Now they have an actually competent competitor. It's the same with any market, and believing that the miniature painting market is somehow immune to it is naive.
>>96279292A model like this just sucks to assemble and paint. It might look impressive if done well, but i do not enjoy it. But something like that Minotaur here (
>>96279268) is just as bad, but for different reasons.
>tactical log with tons of texture>gloves covered by cloth, wrapped by straps, covered with armor>weird knee armour ornaments with no undercut (clearly the sculptor did not know what to do with them when the legs are bent like the right one is)>texture and all sorts of ornament on every single piece of the model>at the same time, weird smooth surfaces (top of the axe, the fucking legs...)
>>96279304I was obviously overexaggerating because this guy is full of shit if he shits on gw stuff and then pulls out this fucking minotaur lmao. To be fair it looks pretty sick and I'd probably enjoy painting it but that's not the point here.
>>96279313Pretty much this. I agree. If looked at "the hobby" of miniature painting, and ignoring all the wargames attached to it, then the more people, the better.
We have more paint brands than ever, more plastic miniatures available than ever, more STL files than ever, more and better hobby tools and supplies than ever.
There is even more hobby stores than there was ever before. At least this is the case here in Germany.
When i grew up, the next GW store was in Nuremberg, which was an hour trainride for me. Now there are 3 GW stores closer than that city, and at least 6 other hobby stores in my area too.
>>96277103>I can get all 60 of them for 360 dollarydoosIts not a horrible price, but for 360 you can also buy a very good 3d printer, just to put this into perspective. And sure, you can paint a lot of models with those 60 pots of paints, but its very likely that you will use up some 15 of them before you even opened at least 15 of them once. Those big paint sets are never really worth it because you always end up with paints you might never use.
>>96279313I have yet to see a product that would get cheaper (while retaining the same quality) with more popularity/bigger market share. That's not how this world works, anon.
Adobe is a perfect example; just like any other big name corporate, they got to their position because they offered an unique product for a fair price. I've been using a chunk of their suite professionally since CS2, and never in all those years their stuff got cheaper. The end result is that nowadays you have an increasingly shitty product (that is still, for some weird reason, the best professional choice) with absolutely criminal, borderline scam tier monetization model. There are competitors, yes, but none are really as powerful.
GW is another good example. They should be credited with improving the quality of their minis quite a bit (although they are still nowhere near high tier scale models), but look at their fucking price policy. It's absolutely bonkers, a box with a few subpar sculpts with plenty of production artifacts cost the same (or more) as a top tier 1:35 huge ass scale model. So sure, their models were much lower quality in the past, but they were also quite a bit cheaper (and also a lot friendlier for kitbashing and general creativity).
Popularity ruins things, simple as. All the snake oil hobby garbage, sloptubers, prices getting higher, marvelization of the lore/setting, etc. are your classical horsemen of the (normalfag, popularity) apocalypse.
>>96279375>somebody knows his models aren't good enough to impress the normalfag masses

>>96279271>I hate what digital sculpting has done to the hobby.Digital sculpting hasn't done anything, it's a tool. People choose to make cluttered minis.
>>96279375He mentions more people into the hobby.. and you talk about prices of individual companies. A hobby is bigger than 1-2 companies.
Take a look at pic related. Its 99 plastic miniatures of very good quality, for below 100€. (you can find it for as little as 78€ actually).
Thats quite some value, and it would have been unthinkable to get a set like this if the wargambing/miniature painting hobby did not grew that much (thanks to GW to no small deal), that companies like Archon can release tons of such plasitc sets, for very cheap prices.

>>96279941thats pretty wild because i also happen to be somewhat of a fan
nice motivation anon is nice
>>96280127nice, we got another one
>>96279972The skin tone does stand out moreso due to the presence of white in both her hair and clothing. It could stand to be a couple shades lighter. If not for Jaina having those white parts it'd probably be less jarring.
>>96280500Her skin will definitely be lightened up, I started with "brown rose" since last time I was told to start with dark shade for skin (it's not actually dark but significantly darker than her intended final skintone) but applying wash on her skin was probably a mistake.

>>96278645>>96278780Properly gross, I like him
>>96278854>>96278968I like your scheme, the green pops so nicely
>>96279249>>96279256Can't wait to see it finished, it looks great already
>>96279972Yeah I think the wash on her skin wasn't necessary. Might as well roll with it at this point though, you can always relayer the skin and only leave the wash in the deepest recesses.
>>96280088These are gorgeous, you can really see the effort you've put into them. Both patterns on their plating turned out fantastic.
>>96280127VERY based, I think the shows feel fits /wip/ that's why there's a good number of fans here
This model
>>96279268 is overdesigned because its details do not lend toward the expression of the model, a beastial brutal monstrosity bellowing in rage, but it also has... bespoke armour and ornate filigree?
Meanwhile this model
>>96279273 is not overdesigned because all the little gadgets and gizmos are what make it look like some unimaginable tecno-horror from a vile inhospitable world of death.
It's not about how many details there are, never has been. It's about do the details further the story telling behind the model, or just get in the way.

>>96280926NTA but I disagree. When I look at GW models I am struck at the sheer amount of superfluous details present. The vast majority of their models are not only bogged down with extraneous detail but it's often further worsened by a lack of clear aesthetic drive. The pinnacle example of this is the Glottkin. It's a very large model and every single part of it's body is covered in all manner of extra details that, while admittedly gross, make it an absolute fucking nightmare to paint and it's aesthetically schizophrenic.
These days I think most of the worst sculptors are on the mainline GW products and the better ones are relegated to side-products like Necromunda, Killteam etc. Even the most mundane of models is bogged down with too many details, some of which are contradictory to the focus of the model. There's a time and a place for wanting a centrepiece model that you spend a lot of time getting extra details on but sometimes, I'd argue even most of the time, less is more.
Probably about 70% done. Still need to highlight up all the skin and a few other things. But the feathers and green jade are done 100%. How's it looking so far?

>>96276639>>96275857There's a reason the DE range is my favorite of all time to model with. The arms, torsos, heads, and legs of anything wearing Kabalite style armor is effortlessly swappable.
Pic related are some I did years ago.
>>96281319very cool skink, anon.
>>96281319Very bright and vibrant. Good work
>>96281193I think lack of a cohesive identity is the issue. Take a look at how that glotkin compares to the great unclean one. The level of detail is about the same. But they are more meaningful with their application on the great unclean one. Its not so much the amount of detail but the amount of types. There is so many different things that feel unrelated going on in that glotkin its like an eye spy book. It turns into noise. They could have made an entire monster out of just the right arm mouth thing, like a big worm. This is just idea soup.
The worst part of the glotkin is the inconsistency, I keep being drawn to the one blank spot on the right leg where there is just nothing because the rest is so directionless.
Uhoh stinkty tentacles will never be cool either.
>>96279972I was being sarcastic about the dip.
>>96279972I hate washes so much. I feel like they only work on models designed with that sort of paint job in mind. Like a lot of infantry in wargaming with all their folds, cloth and armour. Lots of recesses for it to get into. Something with big open flat surfaces like that model just aren't right for them. You could probably still use them for the little creases or around the edges, but dunking it like that just makes it look dirty.
>>96281985They can be fine for setting up a shading base and some variation assuming you paint over top of them again. I assume that anon is going to highlight the face and boobs back up.
Starting the new thread early this time, as I hope to be embroiled in a game of 40K by the time this thread shuffles off this mortal coil. Lotta good stuff this thread; it was hard to choose for the next OP.
