The only parts of the mech that are pod mounted are weapons and equipment bays, and hands. Torsos, legs, arms, and heads are not pod mounted. Those are the things you install pod bays into so that the pods can be plugged into them.

The main benefit of omnimechs is being able to swap the configuration in the same time a regular mech could reload ammo. Where it takes literal days of work to change something on a regular mech, it takes minutes on an omnimech as long as it's pod mounted.

>>Can't in an omni because...reasons. Despite the fact that they are supposed to be highly modular

You can absolutely swap out the engine from an OmniMech. It just takes as much work as doing it for a non-Omni. Which is way more than swapping weapon pods.

This is because back in the very early Mechwarrior VR game days, they could only store so many 3d models. Since each body part was an independent 3d model (as they could be blown off) they managed to add extra variety by mixing and matching parts. This also works for miniatures, so we can build a Stormcrow B by sticking other arms on it.

But from a mechanics perspective, the internal structure and armor is the same, they're just changing weapons, actuators, and cosmetic elements.

Every omnimech has an "empty" configuration with only the fixed equipment and some amount of tonnage left over, hopefully a lot. Whatever that leftover amount is is "pod space". Components can then become "pod mounted", which is fairly cheap and basically installs the universal rails and connections needed. Anything that is pod mounted can be installed into the empty pod space of an omnimech in a matter of minutes using almost no tools other than mech hands or a crane. Weapons and most equipment can be pod mounted, but fundamental structures like myomer and engines cannot. The one notable oddity is that hands are also pod mounted, and compete directly with large ballistic weapons for the same "slot" straight down the middle of the lower arm. You cannot mount a gauss rifle or AC/10 or 20 on the same arm as a hand.
All fundamental crit slot and tonnage rules apply. Replacement of damaged pods is as easy as replacement of undamaged pods.
If you change any fixed equipment, the mech reverts to a regular battlemech for the purposes of repair and customization until the fixed equipment is returned to its original configuration.

That's not even the best use of omnimech designs. having a modular mech like that would make battlefield repairs incredibly quick in the field. You could rapidly take off the damaged sections and have them either brought to the ground so crews can work on them from every angle, or just plug in a replacement module and get the mech back into the fight while the damaged section is overhauled in the field or shipped back to depot. It's like the power pack in an Abrams tank. If it's broke, you easily just pull the whole thing out. Then you can work on it where it isn't crammed into the vehicle or jam a new unit in from your on-hand spares.

All but one tripod with canon stats (there's also a SL-era scout tripod that's actually the first tripod mech ever statted, but the stats were from a non-canon magazine, and while the mech has since gotten some canon mentions it doesn't have an official record sheet) are superheavies, and for superheavies the tripod movement is actually very useful. They're so slow that having to spend MP to change facing means you pretty much couldn't move the turn you change facing, but since tripods can just walk and shoot into any direction it more or less negates that issue.

Fuck yeah use the whole heat gauge.

If you're only over heat by 2 for each round of stationary firing you only begin to start suffering gunnery penalties after 4 full rounds of double ERLL fire. That means you've dropped a potential 64 points of damage up to 19 hexes away (more conservatively, medium range is 14).

Now consider that the streak-2s once upon a time could load inferno; and you realize what you had was a 45 ton sniper mech that can dumpster fast-mover VTOLs and Vees that try to close on it and delete infantry. Even today you can use the streaks during cooldown rounds as you move to a new position or on the retreat.

Is it the greatest mech that has ever lived? Not by a long-shot, but the use-case is clear and viable and it is acceptably priced in BV and Cbills for purpose.

You can't. What makes omnimechs omni is that all their internal data, power, and ammo connection points are perfectly standardized, as are their mounting frames/brackets/rails/whatever. Their gyros are designed to handle wild changes to mass such as taking a gauss rifle off of the right arm and putting a bunch of energy weapons on the left, and their targeting/tracking software is designed to integrate literally anything from any firing position without any software updates or installation needed. They can carry BA as a side effect since they have adaptable power connections everywhere for the BA to plug into and can handle shifting weights all over their torso thanks to the gyro.

Honestly, it should be possible to install an omni-slot in a regular mech. You'd have to replace their targeting system so that it can integrate with anything, but the gyro issue wouldn't matter since it would always be similar weight in the same place and you would only need the universal adaptors installed in that one place rather than running through the entire mech. But there's no allowance for it in the rules. Some mechs have modular weapon mounts that cut the time needed to replace a gun in half, but it's still not up to Omni standards.

IF you even have a shot!
The problem with sniping is your enemy is going to try to move up behind cover as much as possible.
Best case is you get a good vantage point from move on, and even then you're looking at a +2 for your mid-range, or +4 for long IF anything has even gotten into those ranges.
Still, it's not just being a 20 Heat Dual ER Large sniper that makes me hate the BJ-2, it's that this is coupled with being a Streak 2 boat.
Lasers don't have Minimum Range like the smaller Autocannons, so when are you going to USE those Streaks?
You are going to be into the Red with just the Lasers, and your Streaks will what, average a single one?!

>>96333742

And even with Infernos, it's a lot weight tied up in a secondary weapon system for a niche use and a potential automatic shutdown from the extra +2 Heat for every Inferno SRM that goes up.

The small laser is unique among the laser family for the ability to be "doubled up" in a Pod or Mech bay, saving space and acting as "ablative armor" for it's companion laser. If this trait isn't used treat as original rules for crits. In addition roll 2d6 for damage against infantry.

If they don't hit, they don't fire and if they don't fire, they don't generate any heat. Firing one ERLL and the streaks is heat neutral standing and you can scale back further if you're moving and/or jumping.Scaleability in heat goes both ways.

It's a goofy lad, but I find the difference endearing.

Terran production isn't low. You have to remember, it is the one untouched magical place from Comstar safeguarding it through all the succession wars. Yes, even the Blakists had enough cores to blow on hyperspace missiles, one way jumps and everything else. Stone had 50 years of peace to stockpile shit.

Honestly, the whole "The Fortress can't last." is a retcon. The writers couldn't come up with a good way to not break the setting forever so they decided it's untenable. When Levin first puts it up in 3135 in the novel Fortress Republic, he's talking about how he hopes at least his grandkids can see the outside. The original version never had a time limit or resource limit.

The original and probably more realistic theory was that Fortress was a KF emergence wave and SHPG network that would blast ships out of the sky before they emerged. You didn't need cores at all. An SHPG signal warps the space around the destination anyway. But that has no use limit, so they had to cuck out to something else.

We're told that Stoners are in maximum downgrade with the final peace after the Capellan Crusades to the point where they're downteching a lot of their remaining forces to grogtech or 3050's tech for ease of maintenance for an expected long time without combat.

Then we're suddenly told "Haha no, we were deploying a whole shit ton of new hyper-advanced designs publicly during that time!"

Something like that would make sense after 3135, but no, throw it into the deepest lull against all previous material. I'm still waiting for them to go full retard and fill the 2900's with new IS mech designs instead of it being the tank century and the worst time of the 3rd War.

No, the Vindicator's problems are entirely deliberate since they're given out as a double-edged payment/reward. Cataphracts are made by adapting common designs in the first place and apparently Ravens are pretty conventional underneath their e-war equipment.

>Scaleability in heat goes both ways.
While I can appreciate Heat Scalability, the problem is still the Streak Ammo liability!
If a Streak doesn't lock, it doesn't fire, so that's another two points of Damage or Heat you aren't shedding from your Ammo Bomb.
As a classic Blackjack Appreciator, I've learned that it's often good to just waste the ammo when a single ton of AC/2 gives you 45 shots, and Streak SRMs get twelve and a half full SALVOS if you go with 4-2s or 2-4s.
That's 50 or 25 LOCKS, so even if you did get them every turn it'd be long into a match by the time you started to run dry.
Also, Streaks apparently aren't allowed Inferno in Mega Mek...

Under current rules, streaks aren't allowed inferno period.
It's less a streak issue, more a two pack issue. Odds are you aren't burning through a ton of SRM2 ammo in your average game, especially on a mech that likes to stay outside of SRM range in the first place.
People worry too much about ammo explosions anyways. There's already a dozen ways to mission kill a mech, one more doesn't make that much of a difference, don't be a pussy.

But really, it's that the ER Large Lasers overlap SRMs entire range, meaning your usually better off taking the chance with the second ERLL and jumping behind cover to cool off.

Honestly I was REALLY tempted to do what I did in MWO and just replace the SRMs with LRM 5s.

Lasers that powerful wouldn't "melt" armor it would vaporize it. You'd get a localized plasma bubble at the point of impact (which diffuses the power of the laser which is why pulse lasers exist) and the shockwave of said vaporized armor would cause pilots to stumble.

Of course we're ignoring the maximum tard of the DVS-1 retcon where instead of a couple failed prototypes like the MAC book said, they stationed enough on the border for the Taurians to kill and salvage over a regiment of them.
