Is investing into TOW worth it at this point in time? I know if TOW goes to shit I can just use miniatures for WHFB proper, but are the Battalion boxes worth it for the cost? I was looking at Empire and Dwarves since I like gunlines and dwarves.

Thank you. They'll all be ex-Stirlander peasants, with clothes mostly in desaturated greens, browns and yellows. The skin is bone (morghast or ushabti bone if you're using GW) with an agrax wash and highlighted back up with the same colour.

It is weird that warhammer doesn't have more mention of marriage alliances especially with how relatively often women end up as elector countesses or duchesses. The start of 1250pts chaos dwarfs. War machines to bombard the opponent into coming to me, and when they do they'll be met by a line of shields and blunderbusses with detachments of fireglaives as supporting chargers. Thinking I'll paint them in the colours of mesopotamian jewellery as an ode to their heritage, so lapis lazuli, turquoise, pale gold, and a bit of very dark green marble if I can pull the effect off.

Yeah I'd go with the goblin or night goblin kits. Then even if the arms don't quite fit, you can easily cut the bow hands off and attach them to clanrat wrists. Maybe worth checking whether the TOW goblin kits or the AoS stabbas kit (the 7e night goblin one) has a hand size closer to your clanrats and picking the best fit.

TOW is probably above Necromunda in terms of popularity. 40k, AoS, HH and KT are way more popular than TOW. And that's a good thing. TOW just needs to be popular enough that it gets supported in a meaningful way but not too popular that the suits will start to meddle with it.

Any suggestions for Empire mutants? I figure my best bet is to kitbash with an Empire Free Company, but is there any good third-party alternative?

I kinda want to start TOW but only if the theme in my mind is workable. How feasible is an Empire of Man army centered around gunpowder weapons (cannons, pistolers, missiles, Hochland rifle, etc)? I'm not trying to be the best tournament player or anything, but I'd like to know if such a focus is at least casually playable. I am willing to have some melee, but i do want me army to be at least 55% guns.

I just use GIMP and place an image and text over a default "old paper" stock photo/asset, then touching it up by erasing hard edges to make the image more "rough" and sometimes adding other stuff like blood or decals (also found as free assets most of time), it's that simple.

If you're trying to make a historical army Inna fantasy game you will have a bad time like a retard. If you're not retarded, and accept wizards monsters Heros and some non IRL mix of tech and tactics is what the Empire is designed to be, you can have a core of pike and shot and knights backed by archers wizards and maybe a monster and get decent results. I hope made it clear that I was willing to incorporate melee, and by extension whatever else the army has. Thanks for giving me the heads up about wizards, most Warhammer games treat magic as something way more optional, but I'll trust you if you say mages are helpful. Would you suggest elemental wizards or battle wizards? Or are there older wizards not being sold by GW that you'd suggest? I also imagine that, in a fantasy setting, priests might be important. Should I also pick up a priest of Sigmar or Ulric? Or is this just a hasty assumption? Thank you.

Priests, witchhunters, and wizards are all good for empire. We tend to run a few cheap Heros since our Heros are not very killy (sans chapter masters/order masters) so for wizards running a few for signature spells and magic res, maybe kiting out a Pegasus wizards lord with twin tail or the book is good value.
As for lore I tend to stick to illusion, or daemonology for my lvl1s to ensure a good signature spell and my lords get elementalism or battle magic. I haven't used much priests but plan on adding Ulric to my greatswords or a sigmar priest.
As for wizard models they still sell the 2 wizard 6 option kit online and you can kitbash out from there if staying offical, outside of GW any human mage is good as TOW is set before the colleges so magic wise anything went. "Good" necromancers and daemonolgists exist. Just nothing too out of place.
Also an engineer can be nice if running multiple artillery.
Really empire is extremely flexible as long as you accept state troops are fodder and our Heros aren't duelists and you really do want a list that functions togther.
Oh and if you love guns check out the nuln gunners school army of infamy. It's the best way we can run a gunline I think but you have to buy/make very specific stuff like state troops need 1 unit of halbs with 10 gunner detachment minimum.

If you have friends who will join you, or a decent local scene, I'd say go for it. 1.5 is in a decent spot, and like you said, you can always play older Fantasy editions.
As it is right now, my local groups are do a 50/50 split between TOW and a homebrew that a mix of 6ed, 7ed, and 8ed.

I have an ongoing thread on the Eight Edition forum and on LAF (Just search for "dwarfs of monte trocchio") where you can see more of my dwarfs. i'll be updating them soon as I'm participating in an escalation league type of campaign.

But in reality I just decided I'd never use bronze and gold and limit steel/silver to purely blades and chainmail.
Everything else, including plate armour and scale armour is either green or blue; but there's no reason why you couldn't pick say.. yellow or purple.

having such a limited palette (I really use only 4/5 colours on my models look at pic related) makes painting easier and gives a great result once you paint a lot of them.
It'd look even better if you can paint above my mediocre Table top standard

I'd like it if making a vampire my general in my Vampire Counts army wasn't actively discouraged due to their poor leadership and having to be a wizard but unable to cast in armor. Also I want a unit of vampire infantry.

Played a 1500pt game today vs my buddies cult of slaanesh. He ran a sorceress with a 3d6 drop 1d book, 3 units of GW marauders, 2 units of daemonettes, 1 unit of anointed, 2x bolt thrower, and 2x seeker units. Spam into my empire if 1x knights 1x IV knights of Morr led by chapter master, 25 veteran halbs with a captain rocking the 2x blessed armor and griffon std, 10 archers, 10 gunners, 14 greatswords w/sigmar priest, and great cannon. Lots of slaughter but I lost on VP. Some thoughts

The more I play into daemons the more I hate this. A 5++ into a cannonball, gun, greatsword, or lance nullifies so much. Really at the point of saying nah fuck it my magic stick gets rid of it. It's just fucking annoying my armor gets reduced or removed, he'll many of my ward saves are nullified by magic attacks, but every basic bitch is daemons stops 1/3 attacks?? I dunno maybe if I was more competitve a player and had better stuff it wouldn't matter.

for infantry and cavalry I guess beastmen could use other tools, can't they? otherwise yes, if you plan on using them against cavalry or heavy infantry then yes, axe and shield might be more useful

I guess it depends what role they're playing in your army? If they're going after regular or heavy infantry I'd say HWS is better (or even 2HW), but if they're going hunting monstrous infantry or even monsters they may want the GW I think.

Also don't forget you can choose which weapon to use at the start of every combat phase now per the big FAQ, so you could pay for GW and for Shields and decide which to use as the situation demands. Great weapons on the charge to clear a rank, shields thereafter once the enemy gets chance to strike back.

I have a hypothesis

they wanted to make this second arcane journal about a number of cathay units you had to convert (jade warriors with halberds, grane gunners on foot, light cavalry, skirmishers etc) while waiting for the second wave that can only reasonably arrive one year from now, if not more, but GW put the foot down and told them that they won't let them sell a book entirely about miniatures to convert sell (all other arcane journals that have units you can convert also prominently feature big resin kits and overpriced old minis) so instead they decided to cook up this half hassed empire alliance since the units profiles they were going to add would have been very similar to units the empire has (crossbows, handguns, archers, outriders).

Basically I threw them in blender, made a quick 75x50mm base, and scaled them until they looked good on it. But now they're printed they look a bit xbox hueg. They're supposed to be S4 T5 W3 if their stats help you judge.

A full command in every unit that can take them is the litmus test of a player you're likely to enjoy playing against, someone who doesn't care too much about performance if it comes the expense of a visually pleasing and thematic game.

What do you think happened to the original War of the Three Emperors pitch for The Old World? I feel there was quite a clear vision of a specific WHFB period to focus on and they made something of Kislev and the three main claimants to the Imperial Throne in the run-up articles, who would presumably all have gotten focus armies as they drew into the Great War against Chaos.

It reminds me a bit of Warcry, where it launched as this very specific focus of participants from various different chaos tribes competing for Archaon's attention and then that almost immediately got thrown out for just being a general AoS skirmish. Which is much less interesting but probably sells better. I kind feel like the same happened with TOW, like they had an idea for a period WHFB game and they got forced to crowbar it into a full WHFB replacement. But still in a retarded way because half the factions were locked into deliberately nerfed legacy lists.

I guess I'm just stupid, but I really thought we would get themed Empire lists from different periods and regions of the Imperial anarchy, and that if they made the time period broad enough we could get stuff like the Vampire Wars as well as the GWaC.

Playing Chaos I take a champion in almost every unit because I think it thematically fits but I don't necessarily take a standard and musician in a unit of 5 marauder horsemen or whatever. The original sculptor stepped back after having a family and had only produced a couple models for each troop type, so a couple other guys stepped in to create more variations of each model so that people can field a full army of anything from the chorf list. Good stuff.

I don't believe TOW was ever pitched as that. It was pitched as the build-up to the great war against chaos, so that it could mirror the success of the Horus Heresy. Timeline wise, that does place it in the age of three emperors, which TOW still does (technically directly afterwards during the Anarchy, but same thing).

TOW was never meant to be an empire civil war game. That wouldn't have let them include the old factions, nor the new Cathay and Kislev that they've been showing off from the beginning.

That said, the politics of the year TOW is set in feel irrelevant at the moment, since we haven't had any campaign books or much at all to establish the time period well.

When TOW first came out an anon made homebrew for Queek but some feedback from games is that he seems too cheap, even though he dies a ton of the time. Probably because I am too aggressive with him but that'd be what he does.

I mean the war is meant to be a peak that chaos won't reach again until Archaon's time, and Cathay is already dealing with warbands from the north so it makes sense that they'd be impacted by the war.

I don't know how I feel about them joining the Empire in the old world for the war though. I guess their actual involvement is limited to the retinue of a single named character bolstering the forces in Marienburg. Other than that, their inclusion in the game is more as a distant power which occasionally has reason to invade, the same as lizardmen, tomb kings, and chaos dwarfs.

Gw loves shitting out character models, they do the same with aos. Look at the sea elves or fyreslayers, ranges with more characters than normal units, and in their most recent update they gave them more heroes.
As for why, I don't fully understand it, someone with more knowledge on production should weigh. I know the profit margins are significantly higher on characters in a vacuum, but units seem easier to sell. You only need or want so many heroes, bulk of your army is still going to be infantry and cav.
