Bad is doing basic shit wrong, ie thick paints, pooling washes, conspicuous mold lines and assembly issues. If you're retarded you end up here forever.

Ok is painted to a basic standard, but is treating the models as purely a rote paint by numbers experience with no real thought to lighting or technique. "Table top quality" painters without any more advanced ambition end up here forever.

Pretty good is when you have the basics down solidly, and are focused on artistic expression, ie getting actually thoughtful with the lighting, trying new techniques, adding soulful little touches, and so on. Also tends to include getting good tools and a decent lighting setup.

Top quality is just a what happens when you get to that pretty good stage but never stop trying to learn, there's no hard barriers, just learning new techniques and improving your understanding of light and color over time.

I painted my squad of six companions casually over the course of about two weeks for last months collage. I have been working on this months entry for about two weeks as well, and this is how far I have gotten. If you paint to a higher standard then it will take you longer, or if you opt for a mostly contrast job it will take less. So it really boils down to what you are going for.

So I'm contemplating a 2000 point salamanders (new detachment, vulkans detachment) army.

May or may not include Vulkan.
I own 3 Infernus squads of 10. I was thinking a couple of leaders attached to them. Cut between lieutennant, justicar and librarian.

The second unit type I am considering of getting are Flame Pistol totting Vanguards with Jump Packs. Mainly for those pistol rules and detachment abilities mixed with spending some CP on stuff in melee with them.

For the rest of the army (roughly 700pts) I have little clue what to do. Could I include some deathwatch allies perhaps? I hear they have a lot of flamer stuff. I must be missing a unit that has a lot of flamers somewhere......
I included the salamanders detachment in the images so it's easier to answer my questions.

Obviously they wouldn't be teenagers, but it's not implausible that any SG would be on the younger side, at least in terms of their being marines in active service. Post Devastation of Baal they had only one SG left alive, and the chapter as a whole had fewer than three companies' worth of dudes. Then the SG were nearly entirely wiped out again on Wyrmwood. So it figures that their current crop would be relatively green, because they keep dying and recruit their replacements from a chapter where there are hardly any members left who served before the Third Tyrannic War kicked off.

They don't want Grey Knights being just Traitor Hunters... There's going to be a daemon codex.... All of the heroes are in print(most?) unlike half of the DE range among other sorry factions....

SW vs CHAOS is my guess.

decent gun profiles, decently beefy and their biggest issue (they're really fortifications with an infantry tag) gets solved in renegade raiders, and renegade raiders also makes them a big backline threat because they can drop, pop pacts, get indirect and shoot off somebody off an objective
they're pretty shitty into tanks because their guns are casino cannons, but they clear chaff and marines pretty reliably and can even overwatch in a pinch. they once won me a game by covering a firing lane and wiping a 10-man unit of stormboyz in a single shooting phase
though their profiles are weird because there's almost never reason to use the first one, the anti-marine one is also better into chaff because BLAST and no save

We have an anon arguing every day folks can name an Ultramarine at a glance just from a symbol on their shoulder.
We have an anon thinking all templar players are insufferable as a rule because of ONE guy being annoying.

People here need to go out more and stop thinking this niche bubble of this thread of a niche setting of 40k in a niche board of /tg/ for the niche hobby of tabletop wargaming in a niche website like 4chan to be reality.

There is ONE possibility for a different chapter of marines to feature on the box even when ultras are otherwise kept as the posterboys

Tacticals, generally, suck. Most Marine infantry sucks. Tacticals are the cheapest ways to get bodies on the board but they are not particularly useful in terms of doing anything. Running them as Intercessors just for sticky objectives is generally considered better.

The Gravis Captain's abilities work much better solo and so he's not a great pick unless you're running him Solo in Gladius with Artificer armour for a cheap solo piece. Leading a squad, he's not actually that useful.

The Aggressors are solidly okay but they are very expensive for what they do. You will torch a squad, but don't make the mistake of thinking Gravis is good. They'll melt quicker than they melt enemies, which isn't that good considering a quarter of your army is this aggressor package.
Aggressors used to be great, but only as part of Gladius with an Apothecary Biologis and Fire Discipline (This is now nerfed)

As a result of so many Space Marine datasheets being terrible, you kind of always just want 5 intercessors to be sticky objective slaves. The Assaults are fine (but may want a foot captain to lead them) and the Jump pack assaults are great. The Meltaspam is also going to be a bit of a worry because

The Ballistus, Vindicators and such are good strong options, but make sure to grab the HK missile on the Vindis.

Your army also lacks Scouts, which are the single best unit Space Marines have right now and pretty essential to any kind of scoring game.

Drop Pods are a problem with Space Marines because (and this is really quite sad) Space Marines don't have many units worth dropping. You can try dropping some Intercessors to sticky, go for some Bladeguard if you want something to chop people up, or some Hellblasters for plasma fire, but most of the outcomes aren't good. You're probably thinking you can drop the Tacticals and blow up tanks with Multi Meltas but you will do 0 damage to most tanks as you wound on 5s.

>People in aos thought the gold and blue sigmarines were always meant to be the ones in the starter, until the latest starter broke that scheme and featured a relative fans favourite 'chapter'
This only happened because AoS is a failure of a setting in everyway possible.
GW changed out the Golden and Blue stormcasts out because they finally have realized that blue and gold looks garish as fuck and doesn't work as a posterboy colorscheme. It's the same issue with Custodes, gold as a main color just doesn't look that interesting.

Another example the massive culling of the Stormcast line, it wasn't because GW now hates Stormcast and finally listened to the AoS fans.
No, the reason why they culled the range is because vast majority what was actually axed was the OLD original Fatcast shit which looked terrible, ie. it was stuff that wasn't selling well anyway. And GW also said in the same article that all of the units would return later anyway iirc, I might be wrong about the last part.
This doesn't suddenly mean that GW will go and axe the current intercessor kit from 40k. And they won't because that kit sells just fine and most people have no issue with the regular intercessors.

Anything that happens in AoS is not setting precedent, especially not for 40k. In reality it's just GW fixing and unfucking numerous dumbshit decisions it has made in the past.

20 Neophytes with a Primus, given "a Chink in their Armor" enhancement is one of the hardest hitting combos in the entire roster. You start 20 man + primus in the reserves, wait for your opponent to come out of deployment then hit it hard.
>full rerolls
>enhancement gives lethal hits when coming from reserves
>detachment gives sustained hits and ignores cover when coming from reserves
>activate Primed and Ready strategem for critting on 5+ so you get both lethal hits and sustained hits on a 5
It's so good. Mining lasers are too swingy for they hit on a 5+ but if you do hit, you get a bonus hit and you can always rerolls. If you're playing host of ascension the unit is a must.
A unit of 10 neophytes are also pretty good by themselves, you can sticky your home objective, spread them around if your opponent has any deepstrike to prevent them from taking your home objective etc.
You also get to make some epic gamer moves with your cult icon. Say you have a few dead models in your unit and you're barely outside of the range of an objective. You can revive the dead models in the range of the objective at the start of your command phase, and since scoring occurs at the end of the command phase, you can both bypass the battleshock step and score points. I've won a few games with this trick.

I saw that and it doesn't mean really shit if you actually think.
The real reason why they kept the original blue and gold as the posterboys is purely because the ship has already sailed. The stormcast have been blue gold for like a decade at this point, meaning they won't and really can't change it now.
If GW could go back in time and change the SC colors, they 100% would. But they obviously can't do that, so they are now forever stuck with blue and gold stormcast are the front and center of AoS branding.

It's like if GW now tried to remove ultras as 40k's posterboys after being that for like 30+ years and trying to replace them with something like Salamanders or Imperial Fists.
They can't do that and it wouldn't work because it'd be changing the entire branding of the franchise.

So votann would be the land fortress

>Running them as Intercessors just for sticky objectives is generally considered better.
My plan was to drop them on the middle objectives to saturate them with OC and the land raider so I figured I didn't need sticky and the meltas would be more useful. Should I still run them as ints?
>Leading a squad, he's not actually that useful.
I wanted the -1 CP to immolation protocols on the aggressors. Does that combo not work?
>Your army also lacks Scouts, which are the single best unit Space Marines have right now and pretty essential to any kind of scoring game.
I just never liked scouts and I figured the ATVs and jump packs would be enough for secondary play plus more meltas. I kinda wanted to fill the board with meltas.
>Drop pods
Should I replace them with rhinos? The plan would be the same, to run fast to the middle objectives and fill them with bodies and meltas and flamers while vindis and ballistus shoot from behind and jump packs and atvs run around.

Question for socialanons. I suffer from the tism so I require elaboration.

How do I broach the subject of correcting a rule with someone who definitely thinks it is something else without pissing them off? They hold the belief that the rule means this, when I know it does not. I have not confronted them yet because I don't want to piss them off. It's not too serious, but it's nudging me. Is there a good way to do it without sounding condescending?

Anon, I play a somewhat semi-competitive pod. Not full tourneyfag, but for 'decent' players.
Sometimes, I run a mass of Heavy Intercessors with the Ironfather that gives them a FnP.
Whenever I bring them to the middle objective to hold it, even with cover, I very often lose the entire group. Marine bodies are sadly a bit too weak, even if Tacts are pretty defensive for a point cost. Aggressors will be the same, you will not survive 'flooding' the board in cheap Marine bodies, as the ways to kill Marines are just too efficient.

-1 CP for Immolation Protocols does work, but it's a very expensive combo for not a lot of gain. Even against something like Non-Armour of Contempt marines, you'll be killing 7 models with flamers and that drops off a lot against stronger ones

Meltas are also kinda iffy as an anti-tank weapon since they are, most of the time, gonna wound on 5's into most things. Even with Firestorm, they'll be hitting Leman Russes, bigger Nid bioforms, Vindicators and the like on 5s, and you don't get a lot of shots.

It's not a complicated rule it's a simple one. I was the one yesterday who posted about it with the dog picture. My opponent insists that cover does not improve the saves of models beyond their base save, when the rule clearly states that they do. My opponent instead insists it just gives a -1 nullifier. He plays marines, so it's possible he has misinterpreted it for his army (I know you cannot go above 3+ in cover).
To give an example, my ratlings have a save of 6+. With the benefit of cover, they have a save of a 5+. My opponent seems to think that the benefit of cover only negates the first AP, and so I would still need to roll a 6 to save.

Necron: Obelisk

The repulsor is just the primaris land raider, so if DoW4 is as they say a DoW1 successor, it'd make sense for the repulsor to be the big marine unit, and it has a lot of daka

DoW3 had the hero gimmick, DoW4 seems to take from DoW2 when it comes to heroes, allowing you to tailor them and change their equipment.

I don't know if it'll be a case of pick one and only one (like DoW2) or if they're back with the DoW1 system of heroes being unique units.

I think what's possible is that the huge units aren't limited to 1, so you could see multiple knights castellan in admech, or multiple monoliths with Necrons.

NTA but fuck it new buzz word

Lore is typically flowery written relatively esoteric information about an IP

Fluff is anything that isn't rules within a Tabletop rule book

All Lore is fluff but not all fluff is lore.

NuLore is anything newer than a specific point, the term is used to signify a discrete difference besides age, usually denoting a shift in era.

UnLore is lore that actively undermines other lore in one way or another, an example would be a spiteful retcon that specifically targets one bit of information and explains that it never happened, never could happen etc
